Body Sense Psychology
Psychologist, Master of Psychology, Bachelor of Arts (Honours Psychology), Certificate in Sexology
Many of my clients who see me for sex therapy come with some history of sexual abuse, either as a child or as an adult or both. Recovery from sexual abuse can be complex and long term, with many ups and downs in the therapeutic journey. My approach is to be with you as you process, to acknowledge what was, what happened, how it fits within your body and your mind, how you make sense of it and how do you make peace with how it's changed you. There are many and varied emotions and responses that come with sexual abuse. I help my clients to normalise these responses and to come to a healthier and more compassionate understanding of themselves for healing and growth.
I have additional training from the Institute of Somatic Sexology alongside my psychology qualifications and have been practicing as a psychosexual therapist since 2021.
Within my Sex TherapI have a specific focus on treating clients with sexual and intimacy based issues. This includes issues such as erectile issues, anorgasm, vaginismus, performance issues, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, inability to orgasm, libido issues, intimacy and relationship issues, lack of confidence as well as general sexual education. Psychoeducation includes increasing knowledge of physical anatomy, sexual pleasure, biology, consent, and managing romantic and sexual relationships.

If you have experienced sexual abuse, it is important to know that you are not broken, wrong, tainted, unworthy. Sexual abuse, especially early in life or within families can have far reaching consequences in how we develop, see ourselves and show up in the world. Therapy can help you understand how your experiences have shaped you, and how you can respond with new understandings, a new perception of yourself and new ways of being.
In working with sexual abuse, I use a tri-phasic trauma treatment model. The first phase (20 sessions) is purely around emotional stabilisation, safety, and development of internal and external resources. It is only after that where we might start to do any active work addressing the sexual abuse, and this is done in a very specific way so that the trauma in not relived without being processed and integrated.

I have extensive experience working with people who have suffered sexual abusr/assault, & specialise in childhood sexual abuse. My person centered, strengths based & trauma informed practice helps me to create a safe & comfortable therapeutic environment & build a trusting relationship with individuals. This creates a healing environment & supports people to find a way to live with their trauma experiences. I often explain this work through the analogy of wound healing. Before one begins to work on past trauma, the memories are like an open wound. They are painful & have not healed. Through the process of counselling (I've found talking & narrative therapy to be very helpful for clients around these issues) the wound heals & becomes a scar. Whilst you can never remove it, the scar no longer hurts & is just a memory of the incident(s), a memory that no longer has the capacity to hurt.
