Self-esteem is built every day. Our thoughts and behaviours either serve us and our self-esteem or erode us and our self-esteem. As a therapist, I help my clients address any self-limiting beliefs they might have about themselves and their abilities. We will also address their personal self-talk to change it from negative to positive if needed.

Self-concept is the absolute foundation of well-being as manifested in all forms. With the foundation of self-acceptance and self-love, life is extremely challenging. The ego will instantly manipulate one to look for love "out there" which is limited and illusory in nature. Our core and birthright is self-love and joy, however childhood trauma conceals the access to this state, instead creating a self-concept based on shame. Once the shame is transcended, we experience an automatic state of self-love which always there to begin with but had inevitably been "forgotten" due to the negative programming of adverse childhood experiences.

When our self-esteem is low it can feel like everyone else in the world is 'getting it' but us. To my mind, low self-esteem, self-judgement, shame and isolation all co-exist cosily together and create fertile ground for each other. Because self-judgement will undermine our self-esteem, and lead to us feeling ashamed of ourselves. This happy combination then naturally leads us to draw inwards, away from the gaze of the world around us, and into isolation where nobody can see how 'worthless' we are (or believe ourselves to be). Addressing this inner critic or inner judge is one of the keys to reclaiming our self-esteem.
