As a psychosexual therapist, I have a specific focus on sexual and reproductive issues. For women and those identifying as women this could include issues related to: gender and sexuality, premenstrual, pregnancy, postnatal, perimenopause, menopause, endometriosis, vaginismus, infertility, pregnancy loss, abortion, and reproductive cancers. There are many other conditions. My approach is understanding, compassionate, non-judgemental and caring. I focus very much on acknowledging and validating what you're going through and working with you to identify strategies and solutions that help you achieve healing and growth, whether that's in accepting what is, or recovering from what was.

Sandy Bay, Tasmania therapist: Wonderful Mess, counselor/therapist

Wonderful Mess

Counsellor/Therapist, Master of Social Work, Diploma of Counselling
I have become a more and more assertive feminist over the past 4 years, but I have always been aware of how different it is to be a woman in this society. I couldn't play soccer when I was young, not because my parents didn't let me, but because no other girl would play with me, because it was not "girly to play soccer". I was told I "looked too young" for a job when I was 25 - a job that was offered to a 23yo man. But then, more "serious" things happened around me. My friends started having kids and some were treated horrendously by health professionals. The pressure on their shoulders from the very first moment they said they were pregnant: everyone has had something to say about what they did or didn't do, what they are, they way they have been raising their kids. Everything, everything that we women do or don't do is judged by society. Whether we don't want to have children, have children at a "younger or older age", have "one child only". The worst thing, that really breaks my heart, is that this patriarcal society has managed to create conflicts between us women, while I really believe that we should all stand together and support each other. Acknowledge each other and help each other in our own battles. This is my biggest battle as a counsellor: help as many women as I can to realise how much of a warrior they are, in a world where every day is a battle when you have a uterus.
