Psychologist, Ph.D.
Communication difficulties are often at the center of relational conflict; partners and family members may feel missed, disconnected, unheard, and misunderstood. Couples sessions are geared toward reworking the communication and interaction patterns that may have become ingrained in your partnership or family unit - to assist in rebuilding trust, connection, and cohesion. Learning about ourselves, the ways we show up in our relationships, and our response tendencies can shed important light on these patterns, the relational needs that are unmet within them, and ways to step outside of them. One of the most important first steps in our work together is to begin seeing these overarching patterns as the reasons for pain, rather than treating the pain as being the fault of an individual partner or family member.

Most marital challenges stem from entrenched, dysfunctional relationship patterns. I work with couples facing the possibility of divorce to carefully examine the underlying dynamics that have brought them to this point and to determine whether they are prepared to engage in the changes necessary for meaningful and lasting improvement.

Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies

Psychologist, Ed.D., ABPP
Relationship counseling is a significant part my practice but in a unique way. I often work with one partner as the other either doesn't believe THEY have a problem or simply refuse to participate in relationship counseling. Based in part on my training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with many years of experience, I am often able to improve the relationship by working with the "willing partner". Sometimes this involves working on improving communication skills and or assertiveness. Other times, it may involve teaching behavior modification such as using social or tangible ways that improve receptiveness and cooperation over time. In other situations, it can involve helping client recognize how they may be inadvertently contributing to the kind of behavior they don't like. Almost always it involves a degree of helping the client accept the things they can't change and modify their own beliefs and self talk. My motto is "we do more than listen". Teaching clients new attitudes and strategies to improve their relationships is a very gratifying part of my work with clients.

Relationships are often where our deepest patterns show up—how we communicate, how we handle conflict, how we give and receive care, and how we navigate closeness and space. Whether you’re feeling disconnected, stuck in repeated arguments, trying to rebuild trust, or wanting to strengthen an already solid relationship, it can be hard to step outside of the patterns you’re in. Add in cultural expectations about what relationships “should” look like, and it can get even harder to figure out what actually works for you. At Nour Counseling, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to relationships. We work with you (and your partner[s], if applicable) to understand the dynamics at play and actively build more effective ways of communicating, repairing, and connecting. This includes identifying patterns, strengthening emotional awareness, and creating structures that support the relationship you actually want—not just what’s been modeled or expected. We also offer pre-marital and pre–long-term commitment counseling, helping you have the conversations that matter before taking that next step. We are explicitly affirming of diverse relationship structures, including non-monogamy and polyamory, and we are kink-affirming in our work. We understand these are not interchangeable, and we approach each with respect, clarity, and without pathologizing. This is collaborative, honest work focused on helping your relationship feel more intentional, more connected, and more aligned with your values.
