Bipolar Disorder

Anna Owens

Counselor/Therapist, LPC-MHSP, FNP-C, Lifecoach
While the treatment of bipolar disorder typically involves medication as an adjunct I am trained in helping clients develop insight and awareness into identifying which mood state they are in as well as become aware of their personal pattern of "cues" that typically happen prior to a manic or depressive mood shift. The treatment of Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 are both initially about increasing personal awareness of the where the client currently is or is about to be in the mood cycle. From there, I will work with the client via CBT and DBT to address symptoms that typically accompany the mood, whether it be mania, dysthymia, or major depression. The mind/body approach, although involving specific interventions depending on the mental health or personality disorder, is a holistic approach that I use in most cases. I believe that the body, particularly the nervous system, has been underestimated in its contribution to many mental health disorders. Also, many disorders result in somatic symptoms, proving the mind/body connection and its necessity to be treated holistically. The mind/body system is a system, meaning that one effects the other to the point that treating only one part of the system has limited effectiveness compared to treating the entire system. This is the case for all mental health and personality disorders, but particularly in bipolar disorder, as the thoughts and mood states are in flux. The level of flux is assessed on a case by case basis, but the treatment incorporating increased awareness of personal "cues that are predictive of a mood shift, thought-monitoring, challenging the validity of thoughts and slowing the pace of thoughts, as well as increased awareness regarding the thought-emotion connection and how emotions affect the body on both ends of the spectrum, assisting the body to utilize the parasympathetic system as its default rather than the sympathetic system, and increasing insight and ability to better control the changing physiology of the body depending on the mood state through mindfulness. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, or think you may have bipolar disorder, please reach out! I can assess as well as treat and refer for medication if needed!
