Anxiety or Fears

Gregg Unterberger

Licensed Professional Counselor, M.Ed., LPC
Anxiety is like a self-protection mechanism that is on overdrive. But with some newer therapeutic techniques, we can retrain the brain to learn to interpret our fears appropriately, taking action when needed and not "over-worrying" about things so we can enjoy life -- and get to sleep at night!

The Five Flavors of Fear YOUR STYLE: The clues to your type of fear usually lie in the attitudes, self-talk and beliefs of your personality. You have your own unique ways of sabotaging yourself. ThYou can identify your style of being your own worst enemy and the new ideas, thinking patterns and action steps to move freely forward on your life’s journey. DISSOLVING SELF-SABOTAGE: The foundation of self-sabotage lies in the ways we learned we were unloved, unsafe, undeserving and undisciplined as children. Most of our self-limiting patterns hide in our childhood fears, fixations and defenses. But, as adults, we are no longer vulnerable the way little ones are during their growing up. And that which deprived or wounded us as children can no longer hurt us…UNLESS we continue to live according to the fears based on childhood beliefs and defenses. As we learn and replace these old thinking habits, our human health can grow. FIVE FLAVORS OF FEAR: Each of us has five natural fear responses to stressors which naturally keep us happy and healthy. But, when we base our decisions on fear rather than wisdom, we develop defensive habits designed with the attitude that the world is dangerous. This ‘fear fantasy’ was usually formed by a child who couldn’t know that, in truth, the world can be a wonderful place! COPING MECHANISMS: These five protective patterns are: 1) being codependent vs emotionally intelligent, 2) playing victim vs having self-esteem, 3) getting revenge vs behaving with honor, 4) wanting control vs being trusting and 5) behaving with indulgence or rigidity vs having self-control. As adults, our belief in danger or in the need for so much caution, control and urgency can vanish almost instantly. EMPOWERMENT: The Five Flavors of Fear ultimately teach us empowerment. We learn defensive skills through the difficulties, discomfort and ineffectiveness we encounter and create. We can depend on the logical human process of cause and effect within the challenge, our flavor of fear, and our defensive response. We can also trust that the resolution is then obvious and that fear may then become energy for action! This finalizes any inadequacies remaining from the past and frees us for happiness, self-esteem, integrity and success.

Anxiety and fears involve intolerance of uncertainty and thoughts of worst-case-scenario predictions. Avoiding and escaping situations and the physical and emotional feelings only make anxiety worse. CBT is an empirically-validated, effective treatment for anxiety and fears.
