Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Kimberlee Zetocha Halverson

I love taking on new challenges and adventures. My approach focuses on each patient as an individual. I do not expect everyone to fit in a one size fits all box. I have a flexible approach that I individualize based on patient preference, goals, time availability, and life needs. While at the same time I am trained in many evidence-based treatment protocols that can provide a lot of structure and direction. I help individuals explore means of being more intentional with how they approach each day, life, and even the smallest decisions. I strive to help people achieve a more desirable life balance and improved quality of life by their own definition of what that means to them.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology; M.A., Philosophy
There is unfortunately a great deal of misinformation about NPD in the media and online. It is also frequently misdiagnosed for other conditions. I have experience both assessing and treating NPD. In terms of assessment, I use reliable clinical instruments (i.e., those used in clinical trials) to establish/rule out this diagnosis. For therapy, I apply several forms of contemporary psychodynamic therapies shown to be helpful in treating personality disorders (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Supportive-Expressive Therapy, and Mentalization-Based Treatment). I have published professional works (i.e., articles and a book) on psychodynamic therapy as well. Please note that I do not do couple's therapy and that I will not schedule appointments intended for other people (e.g., spouses, family members). All potential patients must contact me directly.

Virginia Beach, Virginia therapist: Mae Winters, licensed professional counselor
Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Mae Winters

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) involves long-standing patterns related to self-worth, emotional regulation, and relationships. Individuals with NPD often experience deep sensitivity to criticism, difficulty tolerating vulnerability, challenges with empathy during emotional stress, and intense reactions to perceived rejection or shame. These patterns frequently develop as adaptations to early relational environments rather than conscious intent. I work with adults diagnosed with NPD or who identify with narcissistic traits and want to better understand their emotional and relational patterns. Therapy focuses on increasing self-awareness, strengthening emotional regulation, and developing healthier ways of relating to others without reliance on defensiveness, control, or avoidance of vulnerability. The work is collaborative, structured, and paced intentionally to support insight while maintaining emotional safety. My approach is grounded in compassion and accountability. Therapy is not about assigning blame or forcing change, but about helping clients build a more stable sense of self, improve relational functioning, and develop greater emotional flexibility over time.
