 therapist: Chad T. Allen,

I am a psychoanalyst in private practice in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, where I work with adults in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy. My work is grounded in the belief that emotional difficulties often have meanings that are not immediately apparent, and that lasting change develops through careful attention to one’s inner experience over time. Therapy provides a space to slow down, speak freely, and develop a fuller understanding of the inner forces shaping one’s experience. I also work with couples who wish to better understand recurring relational patterns and difficulties in communication or intimacy.

Treatment Approach

  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Object Relations Therapy Focuses on how early caregiver relationships shape current relationships. It aims to improve patterns of attachment and trust.
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
Approach Description: Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is based on the understanding that much of emotional life takes place outside of immediate awareness. Patterns of feeling, expectation, and relationship that developed earlier in life often continue to shape present experience in ways that are not fully conscious. Therapy offers an opportunity to explore these patterns in a setting that allows for reflection, curiosity, and careful attention to emotional experience as it unfolds over time.

Chad T. Allen Practice Description
People come to therapy with a wide range of concerns. Some feel caught in recurring relational patterns, while others struggle with anxiety, depression, or a persistent sense of dissatisfaction that is difficult to explain. My work is grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, with an emphasis on careful listening, emotional depth, and attention to the therapeutic relationship. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we work to understand the meanings and patterns that organize experience—many of which operate outside immediate awareness. Psychoanalytic work offers a setting in which these experiences can be explored thoughtfully and without pressure toward quick solutions. Beginning therapy can feel like a significant step. You do not need to have clearly defined goals or to be certain about beginning therapy in order to reach out. An initial consultation offers space to talk about what brings you in and to get a sense of how working together might feel.
