Sarah Eisenhauer Counseling (She/Her)
Counselor/Therapist, LCMHC, LCPC, LPC, AADC
In-Person in Asheville, NC 28805
Online in Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina
I work with adults using a psychodynamic, depth approach (looking at how the past effects the present and considering root causes, not just symptoms), while also taking into account thoughts and behaviors (CBT & DBT) in order to help individuals make change. I work with individuals who are experiencing effects from trauma, who want to improve their relationships, further explore themselves and the roles they play in their world, women’s issues, anxiety, and life transitions. I also offer Ketamine Assisted Therapy for appropriate individuals who may be looking to deepen their work.
Our relationship provides a safe, authentic and nonjudgmental place for you to explore reactions, thoughts, and feelings about relationships and experiences in your life, and your place within this system. I believe that each individual has a unique view of the world based on their personal experiences, and we incorporate this as we work toward your goals.

Treatment Approach
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
- Adlerian Therapy Focuses on understanding a person’s sense of belonging and purpose. It helps people overcome feelings of inferiority and create healthier relationships.
- Biopsychosocial Therapy Takes into account biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health. It looks at the whole person, not just symptoms.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
- Contemplative Psychotherapy Combines mindfulness and meditation practices with modern psychology. It encourages awareness and compassion as part of the healing process.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
- Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
- Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
- Jungian Therapy Draws on Carl Jung’s ideas about archetypes, dreams, and the collective unconscious. It helps people explore deeper layers of meaning.
- Ketamine-Assisted Therapy Combines low doses of ketamine with psychotherapy to treat depression, trauma, and anxiety. It can provide relief when other methods haven’t worked.
- Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
- Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
- Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
- Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
- Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
- Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
- Self Psychology Explores the development of self-esteem and identity. It emphasizes the importance of empathy in healing.
- Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: KAP:
This cutting edge approach allows for the loosening of rigidly held defenses and softening of the nervous system so clients can process their underlying issues in different ways and begin to re-experience consistent joy and well-being
I work with motivated adults (18+) who are ready to explore how their past experiences have shaped them and create meaningful change in the present. My approach combines psychodynamic therapy with CBT and DBT to gently support shifts in painful thought and behavior patterns. Many of my clients come from challenging or invalidating childhoods and are committed to doing the inner work needed for healing and growth.

With over twenty years of experience in the field — and through my own ongoing healing journey — I bring a depth of understanding and compassion to the therapeutic process. Our work together is a partnership: I’ll walk alongside you as we explore the unconscious patterns and underlying roots of your suffering and misalignment.
I believe that healing unfolds through curiosity, courage, and connection. My role is to offer a grounded, caring presence and an authentic, collaborative approach as we uncover what needs to be understood, integrated, and transformed. Every aspect of my professional and personal experience informs how I show up in this work — with respect for your unique path and trust in your innate capacity for growth and wholeness.
I offer Ketamine-Assisted Therapy as one potential tool within this deeper work, supporting clients in accessing expanded states of awareness and emotional insight. Whether or not this modality becomes part of our process, the foundation of our work will be curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to uncovering what lies beneath patterns of suffering.
