Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Schema Therapy Identifies deep-rooted negative patterns formed in childhood. It combines CBT, attachment theory, and experiential methods for change.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I take an integrative approach to treatment, informed by the needs and preferences of my clients. I bring a warm, empathic presence to sessions, which proceed in a spirit of non-judgement and acceptance.

Dr Jacob Ellwood Practice Description
I am a chartered counselling psychologist and EMDR therapist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Psychological Society (BPS). I am currently available from 11am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. I offer short and long-term therapy for help with various difficulties. A common misconception about talking therapy is that it is only for the ‘unwell’ or those with severe mental health issues; I firmly believe, however, that therapy can offer significant benefits for all of us – as a way of increasing well-being, overcoming challenges, and helping us to understand ourselves better. My role as therapist is to provide the space in which personal growth can occur, by helping you to work through difficulties and achieve greater insight and self-acceptance. Some of the issues I work with include: Adolescent therapy (13 years and above) Anger management Anxiety Bereavement Depression Insomnia/disturbed sleep Loneliness Loss Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Panic attacks Phobias Problems at work or school Relationship issues Search for meaning Self-esteem Stress Substance misuse and dependency Trauma I am trained to work in a number of approaches, and I find that the best results tend to come from integrating these approaches to tailor the work to suit your individual needs. The person-centred approach establishes a safe, non-judgemental environment which encourages the expression of emotions. Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on our past and present experiences in relationships, and how these have shaped our relational style and our beliefs about ourselves. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a solution-focused approach that examines how our thoughts and beliefs influence our emotions and behaviour, and seeks to challenge some of our ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour by testing out new ways of being. In addition to these main approaches, I also incorporate mindfulness-based techniques for the treatment of anxiety and depression, and as a way of helping you to live more in the present moment and develop a kinder relationship with yourself.
