Shelley Westergard (She/Her)

Counselor/Therapist, Master of Counselling Psychology, MACP, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, BA, Addictions Certificate
I am genuinely interested in hearing my client's story. I aim to create a space between us that is collaborative and comfortable as we unpack your story, address your pain, and heal wounds. I work with clients ages 12 and up from all walks of life. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, couples and relationship work, addictions, attachment issues, life transitions, self-esteem and co-dependency. I work slowly and curiously. I ask questions, provoking deeper meaning, and slow things down, resting on underlying emotions. I appreciate working with all concerns, big or small, slow or fast. I believe humans are built for connection and secure attachments. We however are not always offered this. I work to create secure attachments with my clients as we move toward addressing their goals and uncovering their full potential.

Treatment Approach

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Hakomi Method A mindfulness-based approach that helps clients notice unconscious patterns in their body and mind. It emphasizes compassion and non-judgment.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
Approach Description: I am specifically informed in Emotionally focused, and Hakomi therapy. When I work with clients I start with hearing their story and why they have come to counselling. If you are looking for a specific approach work please let me know. Otherwise, I will follow what makes sense to work with you. I unpack the story of you, your childhood family, your attachments and your values as we learn more about who you are in your core self. I use EFT to slow stories down and note hidden underlying unfelt emotions, and Hakomi to somatically touch base with your body and what it is asking from you also. I appreciate my client's willingness to stretch themself toward growth and discovery in our work. With couples and relationship counselling I work mostly from family systems and Emotionally-Focused to address concerns.
