I’m Dr. Ilyssa Swartout, a licensed psychologist dedicated to helping adults and couples heal from past wounds and create meaningful change. My approach blends warmth, presence, and evidence-based therapy to help you move beyond old patterns and reconnect with your sense of worth and wholeness.
My background includes over 20 years of mentorship with James Bugental, Ph.D., founder of Humanistic Psychotherapy, and advanced training in EMDR, Brainspotting, Gestalt Therapy, and Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS). These approaches support healing from trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties by addressing both emotional and body-based experiences.
As an EMDR Consultant and Certified In-Depth Therapist, I guide clients and other professionals toward lasting transformation and self-understanding.
Therapy is a courageous step toward healing and growth. Together, we’ll create a safe and supportive space for you to explore, recover, and thrive.
Client Focus
Age Specialty: Adult, Senior, Young Adult
Demographic Expertise: Men, Women clients.
Treatment Approach
- Brainspotting A therapy that uses eye positions to access and process unresolved trauma. It helps release emotional and physical pain held in the body.
- Developmental Therapy Looks at how childhood and developmental experiences affect current challenges. It aims to repair unmet needs and foster healthy growth.
- Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
- Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
- Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
- Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
- Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
- Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
Approach Description: My approach to therapy is grounded in compassion, presence, and collaboration. I believe true healing begins when you feel safe, seen, and supported as your authentic self. Therapy with me is not about fixing what’s “wrong” with you—it’s about uncovering your natural capacity to heal and grow.
Drawing from Humanistic and Existential principles, as well as EMDR, Brainspotting, Gestalt Therapy, and Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS), I help clients gently access and process the roots of emotional pain. These approaches engage both the mind and body, allowing for deep integration and lasting relief.
My work is especially focused on helping adults heal from early attachment wounds, trauma, and negative self-beliefs that continue to shape present-day emotions and relationships. Through guided exploration, mindfulness, and somatic awareness, clients learn to reconnect with their nurturing and protective inner selves—building resilience and self-compassion from the inside out.
Every session is tailored to meet your unique needs, supporting you in moving toward greater clarity, peace, and emotional freedom.
