Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Ketamine-Assisted Therapy Combines low doses of ketamine with psychotherapy to treat depression, trauma, and anxiety. It can provide relief when other methods haven’t worked.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
  • Transpersonal Therapy Integrates spirituality and higher states of consciousness with psychology. It encourages growth beyond the individual self.
Approach Description: My approach is integrative, relational, and tailored to each person rather than based on a single therapeutic model. At the foundation of my work is a humanistic perspective that emphasizes empathy, authenticity, unconditional positive regard, and respect for each person’s unique experiences, identities, values, and strengths. I believe therapy works best when it is collaborative and responsive, so I draw from different perspectives and tools depending on what is most useful for you. Our work may include exploring deeper patterns and relationships that have shaped you, understanding what is happening in the present, developing new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions, and creating meaningful change that reflects who you are and how you want to live.

Kelly McAleer Practice Description
My practice is designed for adults who want therapy that is thoughtful, collaborative, and tailored to the complexity of their lives. Many of my clients are insightful and self-aware, but find that understanding why they feel or behave a certain way hasn’t necessarily helped them change it. Our work can explore both what is happening now and the experiences and relationships that shaped the patterns you find yourself repeating. High-Achieving Professionals & Entrepreneurs Success can come with its own particular pressures. I work with professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs, and other high achievers who struggle with overthinking, difficulty slowing down, fear of failure, chronic self-doubt, or feeling responsible for keeping everything together. You may be highly capable in your professional life while privately wondering why it feels so difficult to relax, feel satisfied with what you’ve accomplished, or trust yourself. Perfectionism & Imposter Syndrome Perfectionism often reaches far beyond wanting to do things well. It can show up as procrastination, overpreparing, difficulty making decisions, fear of criticism, comparing yourself to others, or continually moving the goalposts on what would finally feel “good enough.” I help clients understand the beliefs and patterns driving perfectionism and self-criticism while developing a more flexible and sustainable way of approaching themselves, their work, and their relationships. Burnout Burnout can leave you exhausted, detached, irritable, unmotivated, or questioning work and responsibilities that once felt meaningful. For professionals and business owners especially, stepping away from those demands may not feel realistic. Therapy can provide space to understand what led to burnout, identify what needs to change, and find ways to engage with work and life that are more sustainable. Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents The relationships and circumstances we grow up with can continue shaping us long after childhood. I work with adults who grew up with parents or caregivers who were emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, critical, controlling, self-focused, or unable to respond consistently to their emotional needs. I also work with people whose early lives were shaped by financial insecurity, scarcity, or instability, experiences that can influence how safe and secure the world feels even after circumstances have changed. These experiences can contribute to people-pleasing, guilt, difficulty setting boundaries, hyper-independence, self-doubt, feeling responsible for other people’s emotions, or a persistent need to prepare for what might go wrong. Therapy can help you better understand these patterns and develop relationships, boundaries, and a sense of self and security that feel more authentically your own. Gender-Affirming & Kink-Friendly Therapy My practice is inclusive and affirming of people across gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations. I provide gender-affirming therapy for transgender, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and questioning adults, whether gender is central to what brings you to therapy or simply one part of who you are. I also provide kink-aware and kink-friendly therapy. You should be able to discuss your relationships, sexuality, consensual kink or BDSM practices, and relationship structures without having to educate your therapist or worry that these aspects of your life will automatically be treated as problems. My Approach I have nearly 20 years of experience as a psychologist and draw from multiple therapeutic approaches rather than using the same formula with every client. I tend to be engaged and conversational in sessions, and I value curiosity, honesty, humor when appropriate, and a strong collaborative relationship. My goal is to help you understand yourself more deeply while also creating meaningful changes in the patterns that are getting in your way. My practice is welcoming to people of all identities and backgrounds. If you’re looking for a therapist who will take your concerns seriously while also relating to you as a whole person, I invite you to reach out.
