Lisa McNelley Therapy (She/Her)

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT #156096
 therapist: Lisa McNelley Therapy,
In-Person in Sausalito, CA 94965
Online in California
I work with adults and teens 16+ navigating some of life's most challenging moments — and with women in their 40s and beyond who are reimagining who they are and what they want. Whether you're facing midlife transitions, an empty nest, the weight of caregiving, or simply asking who am I now? — I bring both clinical training and lived experience to that conversation. My approach is integrative and tailored to you. Drawing on family systems, attachment, psychodynamic, narrative, Gestalt, CBT, and trauma-informed frameworks, I work from the belief that there is no one-size-fits-all path to healing. Together, we'll find the lens and tools that fit your life and your needs. I bring warmth, directness, and humor to the work — because sometimes the most healing moments happen when you find yourself laughing through the tears. I am not an expert in your life. You are. I'm here to collaborate with you, and to help you untangle what's keeping you stuck so you can feel more hopeful, more grounded, and more alive.

Treatment Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Family Constellation Therapy Explores hidden family dynamics and patterns across generations. It helps people understand how past family issues may be influencing current struggles.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
Approach Description: In our work together, I draw on a range of approaches or lenses. Your needs and life are unique, so should your therapy. I draw from family systems and family constellation — exploring how the patterns, roles, and dynamics from your family of origin may still be shaping the way you move through the world today, often without your awareness. When it's useful, I incorporate CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) — a practical, evidence-based approach that helps you identify the thoughts and beliefs that are keeping you stuck, and begin to shift them. And at the heart of much of my work is IFS, or Internal Family Systems — a gentle, powerful approach that gets curious about the different parts of you. The part that protects. The part that hurts. The part that is ready, even if another part is afraid. IFS helps you move toward yourself with compassion rather than judgment.
