I have over 34 years of experience working as a clinical psychologist. The bulk of my career was spent at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, where I provided comprehensive, evidence-based psychological assessment and intervention for a range of mental health difficulties, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, substance use, sleep, chronic pain, personality disorders, and psychosis. In addition to my clinical work, I served as the overall Director of Training for the APA-accredited doctoral internship and postdoctoral residency training programs. Throughout my tenure in this position, I have had the honor of providing clinical supervision and mentorship to over 300 psychology interns and postdoctoral residents.
Since retiring from my position at the VA, I have continued to…
- Maintain a private practice providing individual psychotherapy and psychological assessment
- Serve in several volunteer leadership roles involved in the national management and coordination of psychology training and education and the overall profession of psychology
- Serve on the Minnesota Board of Law Examiners
- Serve as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota's Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program
- Teach graduate-level courses at local psychology doctoral programs
On a more personal note, I have a passion for travel and the thrill of discovering new culinary adventures and restaurants. Cooking, art, and photography are creative outlets that I cherish, along with a love for nature and outdoor activities. My commitment to health and an active lifestyle is evident in my lifelong engagement with endurance sports, including marathon running, cycling, ironman triathlons, and hiking. These activities not only challenge me physically but also provide a strong sense of accomplishment and joy.
My practice is anchored in the belief that my clients are more than just their symptoms or diagnoses. I collaborate closely with them to thoroughly understand their unique struggles and customize a treatment approach that utilizes proven methods to address their specific needs. My objective is to apply my years of knowledge and expertise to every individual I assist.
I have extensive experience working with adults from diverse ethnic, racial, gender, sexual, and religious backgrounds. Additionally, I have developed specialized skills to address the unique challenges faced by healthcare professionals.

Treatment Approach
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
- Schema Therapy Identifies deep-rooted negative patterns formed in childhood. It combines CBT, attachment theory, and experiential methods for change.
- Social Constructionist Therapy Looks at how social and cultural context shapes identity and problems. It helps clients create new narratives of meaning.
- Social Learning Therapy Based on the idea that people learn behaviors by observing others. It applies modeling and reinforcement to encourage healthy change.

Process:
If my approach and years of experience seem like the right fit, I encourage you to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
The next step involves a thorough 75-minute assessment aimed at fully understanding your personal experiences, the obstacles you face, and your therapy objectives. This comprehensive evaluation is essential for creating a personalized, evidence-based approach that aligns with your unique needs and therapy goals.
I offer weekday (daytime and evening) and weekend (afternoon) teletherapy appointments.
Teletherapy and crossing state lines:
If you reside outside Minnesota, where I am licensed to practice psychology and would like to make an appointment, I have been granted Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT #18825) by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. This means that if you reside in a state that has joined PSYPACT, you may contact me to request services. Even if your state has not joined PSYPACT, please contact me directly, since some states still permit me to provide services across state lines.
