Some of the women I work with came to therapy for something else entirely, the loneliness, the exhaustion of building a life abroad, and found, a few sessions in, that alcohol or another substance had quietly become the way they were coping. Being far from the structures and relationships that used to hold you together can make any coping habit harder to see and harder to put down.
