Loss or Grief

Claire Karakey

Therapist, LPC, MC
Grief is the pain that is naturally felt when a loss occurs. The loss can be from the death of a loved one or pet, the loss of a job or a friendship, or even a sense of lost safety after a traumatic event. Feelings of Grief and Loss happen to everyone and can. The stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and, finally, acceptance – they tend to happen in this order but that is not always the case. In fact, depression from a loss may occur years after the loss itself. It is important for individuals to work through the emotions following grief as they are necessary and normal. However, if the anger, isolation, or depression do not pass within a reasonable amount of time then professional support may be needed. If the pain is so constant and severe that everyday life cannot be resumed, it could be a condition called “complicated grief” or the individual could have fallen into a clinical depression. A psychotherapist can evaluate and treat these conditions so a healthy life can be regained.

Loss or Grief

Dr. Lyndsay Elliott

Psychologist, PsyD.
The grieving process is different for everyone. Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time. Some people recover from grief and resume normal activities within six months, though they continue to feel moments of sadness. Others may feel better after about a year. Therapy will address your personal grieving process and give you the support that you need for your particular loss.
