Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a control issue that is used to compensate for the fact that a person feels completely out of control. This disorder can have physiological consequences that can cause physical harm and results in lower seratonin levels in the body. As we support you in reducing anxiety and stresses and increasing your sense of control over multiple aspects of your life, you can begin to experience a reduction in your OCD tendencies and/or find it easier to manage them.

OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example. Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity. Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/ Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
I have been training in ERP (exposure response prevention), the gold standard in OCD treatment. Rather than simply talking about it, ERP directly targets the engine that keeps OCD going. Believe it or not, you can learn to face the trigger and not do the compulsion. “I can handle this…and nothing bad happens.” It is very effective and rewarding to see clients with OCD find relief and enjoy life.

OCD can involve intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that feel difficult to control, even when you know they do not make sense. It can take up a lot of mental energy and interfere with your daily life. In therapy we will focus on understanding these patterns and developing ways to respond differently to the thoughts and urges. The goal is to help you feel less controlled by OCD and more able to move through your day with ease.

OCD

Heidi Hartston

Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. When Your Mind Won’t Stop Looping If you live with obsessive thoughts or repetitive behaviors, you probably already know how exhausting it can be. You might spend hours replaying what you said, checking if something bad might happen, or trying to get rid of thoughts that won’t leave you alone. Even though you know the worries aren’t logical, they still feel impossible to control. OCD isn’t about being “neat” or “organized.” It’s about anxiety that latches onto what matters most to you — your safety, your relationships, your values — and tricks your brain into thinking you need to keep checking or fixing something to feel okay. In our work together, we’ll use a structured, evidence-based approach that combines TEAM-CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the gold-standard treatment for OCD. You’ll learn how to: Break free from obsessive loops by gently facing feared thoughts instead of avoiding them Reduce compulsions and checking behaviors step by step, in a safe, guided way Calm the anxiety that drives the urge to control or neutralize uncertainty Understand and retrain the beliefs that keep OCD patterns alive Build confidence in your ability to handle discomfort without giving in to rituals Our sessions are structured, compassionate, and active. You’ll track progress weekly and practice small daily exercises that teach your brain new patterns of safety and trust. Over time, what once felt unbearable starts to lose its power. I BELIEVE: OCD doesn’t define you — it’s a pattern your brain learned, and it can learn new ones. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s doing what matters while fear is present. Recovery happens one small exposure at a time, not in giant leaps. You deserve freedom from the constant “what ifs” that steal your peace. Humor and self-compassion are essential tools in healing — not luxuries. Also Integrated In Our Work: • Interpersonal Work – to strengthen connection and empower you to be yourself using The 5 Secrets of Effective Communication • Mindful Self-Compassion – to cultivate a gentler, kinder inner voice through the work of Dr. Kristin Neff • Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) – to regulate the nervous system and support trauma recovery alongside cognitive tools for a well-rounded approach

Los Angeles, California therapist: Timothy Weymann, licensed clinical social worker
OCD

Timothy Weymann

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can feel exhausting and isolating—like your mind won’t give you a moment of rest. The intrusive thoughts, doubts, and urges to perform rituals can create a relentless cycle of anxiety and temporary relief with a rebound of increased anxiety and distress. As a therapist who works with OCD, I provide a supportive, structured space to help you break that cycle and regain a sense of choice and power over your life. Using evidence-based approaches such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and cognitive-behavioral strategies, we’ll work together to gradually reduce the power of intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Therapy is not about eliminating thoughts—it’s about changing your relationship to them so they no longer dictate your actions or define who you are. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and steady. I understand how real and distressing OCD can feel, and I will never minimize your experience. With the right support and tools, it’s possible to live with greater freedom, flexibility, and peace of mind. You don’t have to face OCD alone.

Los Angeles has one of the highest concentrations of therapists in the United States, with a culture that broadly embraces personal growth, self-development, and long-term therapeutic work. The entertainment industry generates distinct demand for therapists who understand performance anxiety, identity, the psychological pressures of creative careers, and the particular challenges of fame and public scrutiny. LA's extraordinary diversity means therapists fluent in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Farsi, Armenian, and Tagalog are all abundant, making culturally matched care particularly accessible. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA Health system anchor institutional mental health services across the Los Angeles basin.
