Narcissism is a necessary component of a healthy ego. Everyone needs self-esteem in order to function successfully in society. On the other hand, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a legitimate disorder that is not only an outcome of the selfishness encouraged by modern culture but a legitimate condition with unconscious roots in early experiences of basic needs being unmet. Narcissism manifests as problems with regulating self-esteem, grasping one’s relative place in a world of others, and participating in relationships in which one demonstrates regard to others as independent objects with minds and feelings of their own. People with unhealthy degrees of narcissism have difficulty in understanding others’ perspectives, in letting themselves be vulnerable without feeling threatened, and in respecting or having awareness of boundaries.
