Therapist, LCSW, Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst
I see addiction as often rooted in unconscious dynamics shaped by early attachment experiences and relational patterns.
In our work together, we’ll explore how these early experiences may have contributed to the development of addictive behaviors. By bringing unconscious processes to light, we can understand the deeper emotional needs driving these behaviors and create space for healing and growth. This collaborative process allows for the development of healthier ways to manage distress and foster greater self-compassion and resilience.

Samer Fawaz
Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., LMFT #149147
As someone who has struggled with addiction, I deeply understand the feeling of needing to use or abuse substances in order to survive in this world. The shame we feel when we are in the quicksand of addiction stunts our growth and keeps us in the same place. The fact is, addiction tricks us into thinking we are mitigating pain when in reality it is producting more trauma within us. My goal is to create a safe environment for you to express all your feelings about your addiction with no shame or judgment so you can feel motivated to make change.

Addiction of any nature is a profoundly challenging constellation of behaviors to understand, address, and ultimately replace with healthier choices. Addiction is further complicated by the strong likelihood that co-occurring conditions will accompany the addictive behavior: anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges often go hand in hand with compulsive behavior. As a result, grasping the full breadth of the patient’s behavior and background is vital to treatment, but that is just one piece of a holistic approach. Fundamentally, addiction treatment must address the fact that at the heart of compulsive behavior lies a sense of self.
The truth is, at some level we are all wounded or, indeed, fractured. The challenge for those suffering addictive behaviors is that the wounds are so profound that the only way to find relief is to engage in maladaptive behaviors. In fact, the truly nefarious aspect of addiction is that while it is rooted in a fractured sense of self, the addictive behavior itself blocks the patient’s ability to empower and re-structure their internal narrative. Addiction is not only the crutch that soothes the fractured self, it is also the barrier that prevents a new self-empowerment to emerge. This creates a vicious cycle, and the common emotional aspects of addiction then dominate the addict’s self-narrative: guilt, shame, hopelessness and despair.
The essence of overcoming addiction, and the core of my treatment philosophy, is the desire and ultimately the decision to live your life in a new and different way. This decision is extraordinarily difficult and requires a comprehensive set of tools to sustain it over a lifetime. The good news is that the scientific underpinning of addiction treatment is making extraordinary progress. My practice for addiction seeks to understand and suggest new therapeutic options, and to pair those with a deep exploration to the source of your maladaptive behaviors and the experiences that fractured your original sense of self. My goal is to create a safe, trusting and healing environment to explore these core issues and to re-create a new self-narrative, replacing addictive behaviors with new coping mechanisms and actions. Ultimately, my goal is to re-assemble the fractured self, leading to a newly empowered individual with the skillset to begin a completely new, nourishing, and rewarding life.

Sean Sprigle
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC
In my own journey of recovery i discovered that my own previous misuse of substances was just an overactive coping skill which was functioning to cover up my trauma and attachment disruption. I have found a way to treat these issues via individual therapy leading to successful recovery from the overuse of substances.

The truth is addiction does not discriminate. Addiction does not care how amazing or how hurtful your family of origin is. You cannot escape addiction by moving to a different zip code or sitting in a different church pew. Addiction is indifferent to your hopes or dreams.
But your story is not a story about hopelessness; YOUR story is a story about redemption. A story that starts with taking back the power in your life, repairing relationships, and prioritizing your own value. This therapy process is about choosing yourself over previous emotional wounds and trauma. A realization that regardless of your vice, your life is worth more, your influence is worth more, and your life HAS MORE to give.
The cold hard facts are simple. NO ONE wakes up one day and says, “I cannot wait to be addicted to ________.” However, every day someone wakes up and asks themselves, “How am I going to get past my fears, this pain, my lack of self-worth, my feelings of hopelessness?”
The quick answer to that question? We try to escape through distraction. We look for instant gratification, and then we pursue it. At first, it starts with a bump, a sniff, or sip. But before we know it, what began as an attempt at self-medicating ends up in self-destruction.
Let’s make today the day we STOP the hurt and START the journey to healing.
