Benjamin Marr
Counsellor/Therapist, BA MA Relational Psychotherapist/ Birkbeck College - Psychodynamic Counsellor
The generalised term “eating disorder” can cover many forms of unusual, or atypical eating habits and also includes disordered, or distorted body image (body dysmorphia) and even, possibly, addiction to exercise. Eating disorders can effect both men and women and it has been estimated to affect anything up to 5% of all people at some point in their lives, with a relatively greater propensity amongst older adolescent boys and younger men. Other eating disorders may also include behaviours such as the compulsion to exercise excessively, or a negative, or distorted body image, as well as obsessive thoughts, habits and behaviours surrounding various aspects of food.
Relational psychotherapy can generate the opportunity with eating disorders to examine and explore any possibly deep-rooted emotional explanations that may have contributed to issues around food, exercise and body image. With eating disorders, relational psychotherapy creates the opportunity to possibly identify any such sensitive areas and instigate a process to overcome troubling, obsessive or destructive behaviours in a supportively safe space. My private practice has successfully provided a guided and structured approach – comprising both cognitive interventions and practical strategies – to support clients as they initialise a process to create a healthier relationship for themselves with both food and their bodies.

Eating disorder work explores the emotional and relational patterns that often sit beneath behaviours around food, control, and self-worth. Finding peace with your body and food is a true struggle in the times and culture we inhabit. Whether you are struggling with full-on eating disorders such as anorexia, binge eating disorder (BED), or bulimia, or have a hard time finding a connection to your body and eating, there are tools and support for you. We have multiple resources including cognitive, trauma-based, somatic, and experiential therapies to begin the path of creating and walking in a loving healthy relationship with food and with your body. There are no one-size-fits-all approaches as eating disorders are most often the symptom rather than the root. Changing behaviors allow us to begin to see the power of 'embodiment' and how truly free and powerful you are to become......yourself.

The Cycle Ends Here
Eating disorders often start as a way to find safety or control, but eventually, they become the very thing that keeps you trapped. If you are tired of the mental gymnastics of food-tracking and the exhausting disconnect from your own body, there is another way. I specialize in helping individuals move beyond "just getting by" and into a state of true embodied recovery.
My Integrated Approach: Mind & Body
I don’t just treat your thoughts; I work with your whole self. By combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with Somatic (Body-Based) Approaches, we address recovery from two essential angles:
Mind (ACT): We work on psychological flexibility—learning how to let go of the "tug-of-war" with critical thoughts and rigid rules. Instead of fighting your emotions, we identify your core values and use them as a compass to take bold, life-affirming actions.
Body (Somatic): Eating disorders thrive on a disconnect from physical sensations. We use somatic tools to gently rebuild body trust. By learning to listen to your nervous system rather than your eating disorder or past messages so you can learn to safely connect to your body to reach true recovery.

Sunderland is a city in the northeast of England with a proud history in shipbuilding and coal mining, and its post-industrial economic transformation has left significant deprivation in many communities, with mental health need among the highest in the country across a range of indicators. NHS mental health services are provided through Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, one of England's largest mental health trusts, though demand consistently exceeds capacity. The University of Sunderland contributes to the local mental health workforce through its psychology and counselling programmes, and a private therapy sector exists alongside NHS provision. Common therapy concerns include depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship difficulties, and the psychological effects of long-term unemployment and community decline that have affected many Wearside neighbourhoods.
