Marriage and relationships often bring together two imperfect people learning to understand and appreciate their differences. As a multicultural integrative psychotherapist and author of The Pre-Marital Pep Talk by Josephine Aligwekwe, I have seen how many relationship challenges arise not because couples do not care about each other, but because they struggle to understand the differences shaped by their individual life experiences. Our formative years influence how we think, communicate, and interpret the world around us. These differences can sometimes make it feel as though partners are speaking completely different languages. Imagine a French person trying to communicate with a German person without understanding each other’s language. Messages may become crossed, confusion can arise, and frustration or disappointment can follow. Relationships can sometimes feel similar when partners interpret situations through very different perspectives. As a multicultural integrative psychotherapist, I recognise the important role that psychological, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual influences play in shaping our relationships. In therapy, I bring this understanding into the room, providing a safe, non-judgemental space where individuals and couples can explore their differences, improve communication, and develop a deeper understanding of one another. Through this process, couples can learn to appreciate their differences, strengthen their connection, and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Each partnership is unique and all relationships experience problems at some point. Although you can work on relationship struggles as an individual in therapy (and this can be helpful if you are preparing to leave a partnership) the greatest changes occur when you both commit to working through your concerns. It is helpful to think of a relationship as an entity that is created by both partners and needs to be nurtured and attended to. If you are both committed to continuing the relationship, instead of focusing too much on the past events that have brought you to this point, we will look at rebuilding friendship, learning positive relationship skills, and recognising and changing destructive behaviours and habits.

Our training with Relational: Couples/Partners/Family/Chosen Family... work includes Nonviolent Communication, Neurodevelopmental Models, Real Life Therapy, Compassionate Mediation, Convergent Facilitation, Polyvagal Theory, Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems and Intimacy from the Inside Out work, Neurodiversity Training...among other trainings. Partners/Couples/Chosen Family work can range from addressing a topical issue to growing and developing capacity with deeper connection. Sometimes the care is in supporting folks to identify differing neurobiological baselines and functionality that allows for better acceptance and creative teamwork. We may even draw from sidereal astrology and archetypal work to find creative options. (Statement of care: Sometimes, not always!!!! (the sad truth is) people have transactional or fantasy based relationships and they don't want to admit that that is what the setup is by one or both people, and without shame if folks in these situations can admit that, then there is generally less stress to make a relationship behave as something it isn't setup to be -- said with care. Often this needs to be addressed before progress can be made.) Sessions are typically 2 hours long and address issues efficiently, often individual sessions are woven in for both/all participants. Please feel free to inquire about scheduling a first session.
