Laura Lebovitz
Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Healthy relationships and connection with others can help to sustain us. For those with social anxiety, it can feel so hard to feel disconnect from others. I can offer phone or video sessions for those that don't feel comfortable meeting in person.

Those of us with social anxiety are so frequently misunderstood. We may be perceived as aloof, disinterested, awkward, shy, introverted, a hermit. Underneath the social anxiety is a part of you that doesn't want to be rejected, embarrassed, or foolish. That part of yourself needs compassion and understanding in order to heal. I am an EMDR therapist and use EMDR therapy to address negative thought processes that may be involved in social anxiety (such as "I'm not good enough", "I never fit in", "I'm not fun", etc) as well as adverse life events that may need to be healed in order to feel more empowered in social situations.

When we experience social anxiety we often have representations of ourselves that are negative and misshapen. These images have been put in place by past upsetting experiences of being criticized or made fun of when growing up. As these traumas are unpacked we can "rewrite" the story so that one feels less threatened by what they "think" is going to happen to what is more likely to happen in similar situations now. In other words, our images of those experiences are updated.

We work with individuals with social anxiety, and use exposure therapy in our approach, which is the treatment for social anxiety with the most research supported to date.

Social Anxiety can be a very debilitating set of symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Exposure. This therapy is widely considered to be the most effective treatment for social anxiety available. I will teach you how to approach situations that create social and emotional distress while simultaneously resist acting on urges to avoiding such interactions. The result is the ability to be in these situations with significantly less distress and without overwhelming urges to avoid them. People with social anxiety are typically amazed at what they can achieve through this therapy.
