Cincinnati, Ohio therapist: Ben Dickstein, psychologist
Serving LGBTQ+

Ben Dickstein

Psychologist, PhD
I love helping my clients address issues with sleep, anxiety, mood, and past traumatic experiences. For me, helping others as a psychologist is a true passion. When appropriate, I use evidence-based therapy, which has clinical research supporting its effectiveness. I routinely offer couples and grief counseling. I've been told by my clients that I clearly take my job seriously and prepare well for sessions, always eager to bring them the relief that they're seeking in a thoughtful and targeted way. I don't stretch treatment out any longer than needed. As far as my unique characteristics as a therapist, I believe that humor plays an important role in treatment, and that therapists who are willing to be self-disclosing and genuine develop stronger, more meaningful connections with their clients. I see therapy as a very personal process -- far more so than other types of health visits -- and that forming a real relationship is a key component of mental health treatment. I find that one definite benefit of such a relationship is that I'm able to offer my clients truthful, direct feedback, as they always know that any challenging remarks are coming from a caring and compassionate place. Along these lines, I belief that it's a therapist's job to routinely encourage their clients to push beyond their comfort zones and make bold changes.

My goal as a therapist is to create a safe non-judgemental space for all clients, especially clients who may not click with other therapists such as LGBTQ+, gender diverse, polyamorous or non-monogamous, and kink practicing clients. During our sessions you can be your true self. You don't have to mask with me or hide things about you that you think are weird or unlikeable. Ideally I can help you learn to like those aspects of yourself. You never have to hide important parts of your identity with me because I will never judge you for any reason.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, MSW, LCSW
I work to develop a secure and trusting relationship with clients rooted in transparency and mutual vulnerability. Using a strengths-based perspective allows me to help you to uncover parts of yourself that may have been lost due to society’s grueling demands. How can you access a deep level of emotion when you’re just trying to keep your head above water today? When you juggle your job, school, children, relationships, etc.; it can be challenging to experience moments of joy. My goal is to encourage you in your journey and make aspects of your present life more manageable and fulfilling-improving interpersonal relationships with loved ones, and job or school performance. My treatment approach is foundationally built on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skill building; addressing three major areas: emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills. With a combination of processing, identifying thinking patterns, and developing skills, people are often able to achieve a new level of stability, peace, and relief. I have been in your shoes as a client and have seen the transformative power of DBT in my own life. I firmly believe that we are not just deserving of joy, we are entitled to it as human beings!
