Duane Barone

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, MA, LMHC
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with more than 30 years of experience in the human services and mental health fields. He now lives on Oahu after living most of his life in Colorado. I have experience with adults, teens, and couples to improve their interpersonal relationships and create balance and stability. I can also work with teams corporate and industrial teams to increase emotional intelligence, cohesion & performance, and safety. I obtained his BSc of Psychology from Texas A&M University (’87) then obtained my Master of Clinical Psychology (’03) after working for a decade with adults with intellectual disabilities and adults with chronic mental illness. I continued his post-graduate studies through Capella University to help build knowledge and perspectives for his work in private practice where he specialized in rehabilitative counseling with court ordered clients dealing with family violence issues. I currently work full time as a contractor for the Departments of the Navy and Air Force at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. Prior to this amazing opportunity, I owned Caledonia Counseling (2005-2022), based in the Denver area, after completing his graduate school and offered contract services to other agencies and community mental health providers. My practice focused on rehabilitative counseling with court-ordered clients trying to break the cycle of violence in the relationships and families. It is my mission in life to help make the world a more peaceful and safer place. On Valentine’s Day 2018, I founded a 501c3 nonprofit organization, STudents & Athletes for Healthy RelationshipS to make schools safer from teen dating violence, sexual assaults, and bullying. STAHRS.org is the mechanism he uses to reach high school and college students to help them to understand and develop healthy relationships while recognizing and avoiding abusive relationship patterns. I believe that “playing” is critical for stress management and he loves water, frozen or liquid. He loves skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving, sailing, and fishing as well as golf, camping, cooking, and travel.

Somatic Spiritual Counseling

Counselor/Therapist, MDiv, SEPc, Registered Psychotherapist
Somatic Spiritual Counseling is a collective of mindfulness- and body-based coaches and counselors. We all have various specialties (such as trauma, anxiety, relationships, spirituality, ecopsychology, LGBTQ, etc.), but we share a common vision of helping as many people as possible feel comfortable in themselves and in the world. We do this by working with the nervous system and the unconscious images and beliefs . . . getting beneath the stories we tell, to heal from the bottom up.

Honolulu's surface image as a paradise can obscure significant mental health challenges tied to Hawaii's extreme cost of living — among the highest in the United States — the stress of geographic isolation, and the psychological weight carried by Native Hawaiian communities navigating cultural loss and historical trauma. The city has a majority Asian and Pacific Islander population, including large Japanese, Filipino, and Native Hawaiian communities, and culturally competent therapists who understand Pacific Islander family values and collectivist systems are especially sought after. Tripler Army Medical Center serves the military population across the Pacific Command, while The Queen's Medical Center provides civilian institutional mental health resources. Therapist availability in Honolulu is lower relative to comparable mainland metros, and telehealth has become important for residents seeking specialist matching beyond what is available locally.
