OCD

Dr. Adam Shafer (Chicago, IL)

Psychologist, Psy. D., M.A.
Being restricted by intense worries about oneself and others can lead people into rigid routines that function to alleviate the intensity of their inner tensions, if only for a short time. People who are unable to break out from these patterns can become self-critical and lose a sense of hope that can be debilitating. It is important to remind ourselves in these instances that things can improve and that sometimes it may only take the effort to reach out for help.

OCD

Wayne G. Siegel, PhD, ABPP

Psychologist, Clinical Psychology
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) isn’t just about rituals or repetitive behaviors—it’s often driven by intrusive thoughts, doubt, and a relentless need for certainty. Whether you're managing contamination fears, moral scrupulosity, relationship doubts, or perfectionistic obsessions, I offer targeted, evidence-based treatment designed to interrupt the cycle and restore clarity. My approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)—a specialized model for treating obsessional doubt and inferential confusion. We’ll map your obsessional sequences, identify cognitive distortions, and build a personalized toolkit for reclaiming agency over your thoughts and behaviors. Treatment is structured, collaborative, and grounded in scientific research. I also provide custom psychoeducation materials, obsessional mapping worksheets, and values-based decision tools to support long-term resilience. Whether you're a healthcare professional, entrepreneur, or someone navigating OCD behind a high-functioning exterior, we’ll build a roadmap that respects your intelligence and equips you for change.

Headline: Take the Steering Wheel Back from OCD The Specialized Path to Relief OCD can make your world feel incredibly small, turning everyday moments into a minefield of "what-ifs" and exhausting rituals. In my private-pay practice, I offer a focused, high-touch approach to help you break these cycles using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—the gold standard in OCD recovery. How We Work Together: A Collaborative Alliance I understand that the idea of "facing your fears" can feel overwhelming. That is why my approach is deeply client-centered and built on a foundation of total trust. You Are the Expert on You: We work as a team. While ERP involves progressively leaning into the triggers, thoughts, or places that spark your anxiety, I will never push you further than you are willing or able to go. The Goal is Mastery, Not Fear: We move at a pace that is challenging but manageable, giving you the tools to experience a trigger without needing a compulsion to neutralize it. This is how you reclaim your brain. The Private Pay Advantage for OCD ERP is a highly specialized, nuanced intervention. By choosing a private-pay specialist, you are investing in: Clinical Freedom: We aren't limited by insurance-mandated timeframes. We can spend the time we actually need on complex exposures. A Custom Roadmap: Every compulsion is different. My smaller caseload allows me to design a deeply individualized hierarchy of exposures that target your specific intrusive thoughts. Higher Accessibility: You get a partner who is fully invested in your progress and available for the high-level support that OCD recovery requires. Ready to break the cycle? If you’re tired of letting your compulsions run the show, let’s build a plan to get you back to the life you value. Schedule a free consultation to see how we can start this work together.

I help individuals build a stronger and more stable sense of self-worth. OCD is a companion. It accompanies us, even when we don't want it to. Sometimes we have rumination and spiraling thoughts that don't go away. (obsession) and we feel that doing a particular thing or thinking a particular thing over and over (compulsion) will make it better. It's okay to struggle with this cycle. You are not bad or flawed. You struggle with OCD. I am highly experienced in exposure and response prevention therapy to help manage OCD. Let's talk about it.

OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example. Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity. Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/ Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.

In supporting patients struggling with OCD issues, I provide compassionate and evidence-based interventions to help them manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Through therapy, we work on understanding the underlying fears and compulsions driving their OCD behaviors. I offer cognitive-behavioral techniques such as exposure and response prevention to help them gradually confront and reduce their obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Additionally, we focus on developing coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness practices to manage anxiety and stress. The goal is to empower patients to regain control over their lives and engage in meaningful activities, despite their OCD symptoms, leading to greater freedom and well-being.
