Through the twenty year private practice career as a counselor, I have had a special interest in helping couples that were on the brink of divorce or separation. Many of them found themselves here due to infidelity. It is a special thing to help people to first understand infidelity; why it happens and what to do about it. Primarily, partners often feel that infidelity is their fault: that they did not do something well enough or that they are not attractive, pretty or handsome enough. That is the furthest thing from the truth. Infidelity most often happens due to sexual addiction, or due to the lack of feeling happy with one's self. When another shines their warm light of attention on you, and pays you lots of compliments, it can be very addictive to achieve that dopamine rush. There is also the element of the Coolidge effect. There is a biological thing that happens in animals. Males, (and to some extent females of the species) experience renewed sexual interest whenever a new partner is introduced.
This phenomenon comes about from an anecdote about Calvin Coolidge when he was President. The President and Mrs. Coolidge were being shown around an experimental government farm walking with two separate groups of reporters. When the first lady, whom was known to have a lot of moxie, came to the chicken yard she noticed that a rooster was mating very frequently. She asked the attendant how often that happened and was told, "Dozens of times each day." Mrs. Coolidge said, "Tell that to the President when he comes by." Upon being told this, President Coolidge asked, "Same hen every time?" The reply was, "Oh, no, Mr. President, a different hen every time." President: "Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge."
