Downers Grove, Illinois therapist: Claudia Mellott, licensed professional counselor
Divorce

Claudia Mellott

Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, LCPC
Divorce, for many people, can be one of the most painful losses of their lives. Emotions are at a high, as are fears. For others, divorce can feel like a release from pain or a resurgence of hope. It is not unusual for people to float between these two extremes during a divorce. Psychotherapy can be an extremely useful tool in untangling complex emotions, learning or honing the skills necessary to go through the divorce process as well as planning what life will look like after divorce. Change can be difficult and divorce effects every aspect of life. Attorneys deal with the legal and financial aspects of divorce. A bad divorce can leave a person and a family damaged. Divorce counseling can result in less damage being done to all parties concerned. My practice does not include any type of court assessment, guardian ad litem, or child custody services.

Licensed Professional Counselor, M.S., LCPC
As a Divorce Mediator I can assist you in navigating the ending of your marriage. I received my Divorce Mediator certificate from Northwestern University. My specialization is in the emotional aspect of the divorce. There are ways to separate that allows for detachment from the anger that often accompanies divorce, and helps each party to be free from that attachment. If children are involved it is important to learn a new way of being together as a "family." I have worked with many couples who were able to divorce without the emotional bondage that often occurs without therapy.

Seeking help is a powerful step to improving your quality of life. Talking to someone about whatever your concerns are is something that almost anyone can benefit from, but many people are afraid to reach out. If you are considering therapy or coaching, I applaud you, and I really do want to help you find what you need to feel POWERFUL and help you develop the tools to have peace in your life. I enjoy working with diverse clients, and have treated patients on the inpatient as well as outpatient basis. I began providing therapy in 1996, and have worked full time in several local hospitals before deciding to work full time in outpatient private practice. Though I work with many populations, I enjoy helping individuals with issues of trauma as well as working with couples. I work with all age ranges and have helped clients with a range of diagnosis. I use a variety of techniques, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR. I am also a Certified Hypnotist and a trained mediator.

Divorce can be a significant aspect of grief and trauma, triggering complex emotional responses. Within my therapeutic approach, I draw upon Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques and mindfulness coping skills to provide essential support for clients navigating the aftermath of divorce. Together, we delve into the multifaceted layers of loss, helping you process the grief and emotions associated with the end of a significant relationship. Through CBT, we explore thought patterns and behaviors that might be exacerbating your distress, working to reframe them in a more constructive light. Additionally, mindfulness techniques serve as valuable tools to navigate the present moment and manage difficult emotions effectively. By combining these approaches, my aim is to guide you through the process of healing, helping you acknowledge what you're missing while also building resilience and coping strategies. Through this collaborative journey, we work towards reclaiming your emotional well-being and crafting a healthier perspective on the road ahead.
