ADHD is often accompanied by emotional dysregulation and shame. Using Somatic Experiencing and Mindful Self-compassion, we can address the feelings and the stories we tell ourselves that affect our daily performance and emotional well being. A regulated nervous system is a huge support for working with the executive functioning deficits that may accompany your ADHD.

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
For many years, I have offered an ADHD program with specific techniques to use in assisting with attention, focus and concentration, and the lessening of distraction. I have administered tests for ADD and ADHD. I do screening with children, adolescents and adults. I also work with parents, schools and universities. I provide special programs for ADHD, as well as assistance with obtaining accommodations on standardized tests. The book, “Driven to Distraction” is a helpful resource for understanding this disorder. Parents of these children diagnosed with this condition are often running around trying to pick up the pieces! These children forget assignments, forget to bring their projects to school, and have trouble organizing and managing their lives. Their executive functioning is not as good as it should be. Often gifted children appear to have ADD or ADHD because they are perceiving so many mental stimuli at once that they are not able to attend to details or they become distracted from the goal at hand. I regularly offer free zoom workshops, which can provide a way to experience peace and calm, and organization. Please call for the latest schedule or for a consultation: 301-229-8000

Amanda Shrekenhamer

Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, LPC
I approach my work with individuals from a place of compassion and empathy, understanding that by the time someone comes to work with me, they may have experienced shame or embarrassment about some of their struggles. I offer coaching using a structured and supportive approach to help individuals with ADHD and/or executive functioning concerns. During our sessions, we work on time management strategies, daily life skills, and ways to set realistic goals and achieve them. I also believe that it is often important to process the challenges of being neurodivergent in neurotypical affirming spaces (many of my clients with ADHD have been told they aren't living up to their potential, or that they are lazy etc.), so that self acceptance and resilience can be nurtured.

ADHD manifests in three primary forms: Inattentive, Hyperactive, and Combined. Its symptoms are rooted in a deficiency of motivation, stemming from neurochemical imbalances in the brain. This is compounded by the brain's natural inclination to conserve energy by minimizing effort in task execution, a process often compromised by diminished levels of neurochemicals like dopamine. It is crucial to recognize that the brain prioritizes essential tasks while relegating others.

If you have always excelled in your career, it’s possible that many people don’t see the long hours that you put in and recognize how late you stay at work to get things done. Yes, you get it all done and usually deliver high quality work, but it comes at a cost. Often, there is anxiety about maintaining a certain level of success. You may feel like you pulled off something amazing, but doubt your ability to do it again, or to sustain what you’ve created. In fact, you may be great at coming up with the big picture ideas and find it hard to follow through with the important details. It’s likely that you are excited by so many things that it’s hard to focus on just one thing. You may also find that because so many things come easily to you, that it is so frustrating when you come across a challenge that feels different from the rest. ------ Being successful and having ADHD can mean that others may not even recognize that you have ADHD because you have naturally found workarounds for your areas of weakness. This may allow you to excel at school or in your career, but challenges with being organized, handling intense emotions, and managing your time wisely will catch up eventually. Hitting that wall can show up as burnout, challenges in relationships, financial issues, or a loss of confidence in yourself. The skills that got you to where you are, may not be enough to get you to the next level. You are not alone and therapy can help. You don’t need to be fixed, you just need some additional support so that you can improve your functioning across the board. Through our work together, I can help you 1. Learn how to work with the brain that you have 2. Improve how you manage your emotions so that they don’t manage you 3. Increase your confidence in yourself and stop being so hard on yourself
