Baltimore, Maryland therapist: Kisha Winston-Watkins, licensed clinical social worker
Loss or Grief

Kisha Winston-Watkins

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C, MBA
A common misconception about grief and loss is the expectation to simply 'get over it.' Society often implies that grieving should be brief and that life should carry on as though nothing has changed. However, denying ourselves the time and permission to grieve can impede our ability to heal. Unresolved grief has a way of surfacing in unexpected and often disruptive ways. The reality is that we don’t ‘get over’ a loss; instead, we learn how to live alongside it. My mission is to provide a compassionate, judgment-free space where individuals can express their loss, navigate their grief, and discover healthy ways to adapt to a new normal. Together, we will uncover your strength and resilience as you move forward in this process.

Loss or grief counseling provides a compassionate and supportive path for those experiencing the profound emotional pain that accompanies the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a pet, or any significant life change. Grief is a deeply individual experience, and our counseling services honor the unique way each person processes loss. We are here to accompany our clients on their journey through grief, toward healing and finding new meaning in life after loss. Navigating the Path Through Grief * Personalized Support: We understand that each person's experience with loss is unique, and we tailor our support to meet individual needs and circumstances. * Stages of Grief Awareness: We help clients understand the stages of grief and identify where they are in their own process, acknowledging that these stages are non-linear and personal. * Expressive Techniques: We encourage the expression of grief through a variety of means such as art, writing, and other creative channels that facilitate coping and healing. * Coping Strategies: Clients gain tools to manage the intensity of their grief, learn to adjust to life without their loved one, and embrace self-care. * Group Support: When appropriate, we offer group counseling sessions, providing a community of understanding and shared experiences that can alleviate feelings of isolation. Goals of Loss or Grief Counseling Our loss or grief counseling services aim to: * Provide Emotional Validation: Offer a safe and validating space for clients to express and process their grief without judgment. * Facilitate Healing: Support clients as they navigate the complex emotions and challenges that arise during grieving. * Build Resilience: Empower clients with strategies and skills to handle difficult moments and anniversaries. * Reconstruct Identity: Assist in the process of redefining self and finding purpose beyond the loss. * Encourage Continuation of Bonds: Help clients find ways to maintain a healthy connection to the memory of their loved ones while moving forward in life. Grief can be a lonely and overwhelming road, but with the accompaniment of our experienced counselors, healing becomes possible. Embrace the journey through grief with us as a supportive partner. Loss or Grief

Stacey Hellman

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C
Sometimes a person is diagnosed with Depression but what is actually happening is a normal grieving response to a loss like the death of a loved one, divorce, illness, miscarriage or other significant event. If this is the case then we need to focus on learning about what "counts" as a loss, learning about the grieving process, and supporting the client through the ups and downs that come with it. People process losses in different ways and it's important for clients to be able to identify what their patterns are and what messages they have received from parents, religion and society about how to handle loss. Sometimes these messages really cause harm and make it nearly impossible for someone to go through all the necessary stages of grief in order to integrate the loss into their experience. When we go through a loss, it can be very difficult to think about anything else and it's common for people to engage in behaviors to try to numb emotions and avoid thinking about it. But when we avoid dealing with the loss, it doesn't just get better on its own; rather we just delay the grieving process and the repressed feelings can actually cause physical illness. Additionally, when we don't process and feel our emotions, it's impossible to actually enjoy life because we are spending a lot of energy avoiding feelings and trying to be numb. Part of my job in helping people move through grief is to give them concrete tools they can use to deal with their feelings in small chunks rather than all at once which is overwhelming.
