While we all feel sad on occasion. Depression is a physical/chemical process. Depressed/sad mood along with loss of interest or pleasure for more than two weeks are main indicators of depression. Other symptoms which could indicated depression are insomnia, loss or increased weight, fatigue or loss of energy, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, hopelessness, helplessness or recurrent thoughts of death, talking about or an attempt of suicide. If you or someone you know talks about death or suicide get help from a mental health professional or physician as soon as possible. If you or someone you know has a plan or has the means to carry out suicide call 911 or take them to the nearest hospital immediately. Never leave someone alone if they intend or have the ability for suicide. Depression is a medical problem. If you have depression you need the help of a mental health professional or a physician to diagnose and treat your depression.

Depression

Chris Scarberry

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
The word "depression" is often used by most everyone in our culture. As such, many people tend to equate sadness or feeling blue with being "depressed." One of the chief preliminary understandings I bring to the table is skill in diagnosing Major Depressive Disorder from having worked as a mobile crisis counselor, having seen many clients with suicidal ideation over the years. I understand that Major Depression is no something one can easily will away by just doing a bit more exercise or trying to think positively. I realize that clients who live with depression often have people in their lives telling them to get over it, move on, pray it away etc. In addition to not using these platitudes with clients, I recognize that people living with MDD often need a combined approach of therapy and medication. If you have never tried meds or seen a psychiatrist, I will help you figure out whether you should explore this. Also, given my clinical background, I do not overreact to clients having suicidal thoughts or severe depression, so these topics can be talked about openly with me without fear of me operating from a reactive stance.

Middle Path Wellness Collective

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, LMSW, LPC, PLPC
We specialize in helping clients who are experiencing depression, including feelings of emptiness, low motivation, disconnection, and a loss of joy or meaning in their daily lives. Depression can make even simple tasks feel overwhelming and can often be accompanied by self-criticism, hopelessness, or a sense of being stuck. Many clients continue to function on the outside while internally feeling exhausted, numb, or unlike themselves. Our approach focuses on helping clients understand the emotional and relational roots of their depression, reconnect with themselves, and rebuild a sense of energy, purpose, and hope. Through supportive, attachment-informed care, we help clients develop healthier emotional patterns, strengthen self-compassion, and gradually reengage with their lives in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.
