Kansas City, Missouri therapist: Alicia Polk, licensed professional counselor
Dissociative Disorders

Alicia Polk

Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, LPC, BC-TMH, CCTP-II
As a level 2 Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, my focus is working with people with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). If you have DID I know before we ever talk that your personal history is one that most people could never imagine and that you are an amazing survivor, even if you don't feel like it. Often times, the people I work with don't remember traumatic histories and their dissociative disorder is baffling to them. If this describes you, you might feel like or worry that you are "crazy," but I know you aren't and I'll explain to you how you can feel crazy but still be very sane. I understand that many people with DID don't trust easily. I don't expect to you to trust me until I've earned your trust, and that might take a very long time. If you haven't been diagnosed with DID but you've been given a list of diagnoses a mile long from various health providers, they might have missed the DID. It is common for DID to be missed (on average it is 7 years in the mental health system before it is diagnosed correctly). My approach to working with DID is focus first on stabilization rather than memory work. This is because memory work done too early can further traumatize you. For this reason, I will not ask you lots of questions about the traumas you have experienced. I offer a free 15-minute telehealth (video) consultation; this is a great way for you to get some of your questions answered and to see if you would feel comfortable working with me.
