"There is no normal life that is free of pain. The very wrestling with our problems provides the impetus for growth." Fred Rogers - - - When we are trapped inside toxic relationship cycles, we often come to a point where we feel like there is no way out—especially if we keep on recreating the same toxic patterns with the people around us. The first step to breaking free is to understand that you have the power to get out and save yourself from destructive patterns so you can live your life in the healthiest, most authentic way possible. It is never too late to ask for help, and my therapy approach involves giving you the guidance and support you need to identify these toxic relationships in your life so you can start building healthy, mindful connections. We will work together to discover how you can break the cycle, rework, and nurture your relationships by identifying the root cause of these unhealthy patterns. This could involve pinpointing traumatic childhood experiences like neglectful or abusive behaviors from parents and other authority figures in your life. Once you’ve recognized where these dysfunctional patterns come from, we will work toward getting rid of harmful belief systems like constant self-blaming or feeling as if you are a bad person, so you can begin to prioritize your well-being. We can then work on rebuilding your self-esteem, setting your emotional and mental boundaries, and learning how to better regulate your emotions. Breaking away from these patterns will eventually give you the peace of mind you need to finally start loving yourself so that you feel worthy of good treatment. That is the first step in creating and nurturing positive relationships while living a life that’s free from emotional pain and trauma-induced vicious cycles.

The nursery rhyme which says, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," couldn't be further from the truth. Emotional abuse can have a detrimental impact on confidence and self-worth. Together we can unpack and reprocess the trauma related to experiencing emotional abuse and develop coping mechanisms and strategies to heal from that trauma. We can also work on creating healthy relationships and boundaries that fuel mutual connection.

New York City, New York therapist: Rene Gonzalez, licensed mental health counselor
Emotional Abuse Therapy

Rene Gonzalez

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, LMHC
Emotional abuse therapy can help you rebuild your relationship with yourself, while also addressing some of the common symptoms that result from this kind of abuse, such as shame, self-doubt, hypervigilance, and re-experiencing, among others. I offer a safe, boundaried relationship where we go at your pace, and where I also teach you self-compassion, and how to tune into your gut and build self-trust. Too often—after experiencing gas lighting, for example—we start to doubt ourselves and our ability to assess safety, especially in other people. Unlearning this takes time and a trusting relationship.
