Charlotte, North Carolina therapist: Carrie Torn, licensed clinical social worker
Trauma and PTSD

Carrie Torn

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
Carrie often treats trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) . an evidence-based practice used in psychotherapy to treat trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and phobias. EMDR helps facilitate the brain's natural healing processes through bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. During a traumatic or stressful event, the brain does not process information as it normally would. When overwhelmed, information can get stuck or stored in the brain in unhelpful ways allowing past events to negatively affect you in the present. The old stored information can be triggered in the present and can cause you to have flash backs or be triggered by similar thoughts, feelings, or bodily sensations from when the trauma occurred. This can impact the way a person views the world and how they relate with others. EMDR uses eye movements (similar to what occurs during REM sleep) to help facilitate information processing and reduce the effects of trauma and the underlying negative beliefs.

Trauma and PTSD

Susan Spicer

Psychologist, PhD
My background as a licensed psychologist and a trauma survivor uniquely positions me to offer compassionate and effective support to individuals who have experienced trauma, whether it be abandonment or physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. My personal journey through trauma has given me firsthand insight into the complex and often challenging process of healing. This, combined with my education and professional experience, enables me to approach therapy with deep empathy, understanding, and a genuine connection to my clients' experiences. I believe in the power of resilience and the potential for growth in the face of adversity, and I am dedicated to helping survivors on their path to recovery and empowerment. With EMDR as my primary treatment modality, I bring a wealth of experience and expertise in guiding individuals towards trauma healing. My approach focuses on collaboratively identifying trauma targets for processing while also prioritizing resourcing techniques to reestablish a sense of safety and inner peace. Through EMDR therapy, I help clients transform the way traumatic memories are stored in the brain, ultimately freeing them from flashbacks, nightmares, and avoidance patterns associated with trauma. My commitment is to support individuals on their journey to reclaim their lives and find lasting relief from the effects of trauma.

Trauma and PTSD

Dan Walinsky

Psychologist, PhD
I've found that the range of traumas that people experience disrupts our experience of day-to-day life and relationships in so many ways. So many people who've experienced patterns of traumatizing, persistently invalidating, or minimizing experiences have found coping strategies to manage the profound impacts of trauma but eventually find that those strategies no longer work. Together, we will look at the impact of traumas and using a range of practices, which potentially include EMDR and internal parts work, we will work to supportively rebuild a sense of self-guided trust in the world.

Raleigh, North Carolina therapist: Vanessa Roddenberry, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Vanessa Roddenberry

Psychologist, Ph.D.
I'm a trauma specialist, highly trained in providing cutting-edge evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD. Know that your trauma is valid. I operate from a trauma-informed perspective so that we ask the very important question of "what happened" and can place your current problems within this very important context. An event may be traumatic for many different reasons. Some traumas may be overt, while others may be subtle and happen over a long time. All that matters is that if something is traumatic to you, we will honor it as such and work to understand and heal its effects. I help clients process difficult life events safely and compassionately, while also fostering resilience and posttraumatic growth. I use gold standard PTSD treatments of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) or Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), as well as trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and compassion-focused work. I have worked with many different forms of trauma and in various settings such as the Veterans Affairs Hospital system and outpatient settings.
