Barbara Freedman
Pre-Licensed Professional, M.Ed., OAMHP(Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals-2704-G)
My role in helping clients deal with the narcissist in their life arises from my trauma informed work with victims, as many of them have or continue to experience on-going abuse from someone with this disorder. Those with a narcissistic personality disorder are unwilling to admit anything is wrong in regard to how they behave, making them extremely difficult to deal with. Abusive narcissistic parents see their children merely as an extension of themselves. Although this behavior cannot be altered, safety issues can be addressed, and clients can be taught more functional means of dealing with the narcissist to avoid allowing them to interfere with their happiness.

The impact of living in close relationship with a narcissistic personality type can be utterly destructive. Cycles of manipulation, gaslighting, and emotional devaluation often lead to doubting your own reality. Recovery often focuses on untangling the manipulation, rebuilding your shattered self-esteem, and safely reclaiming control over your own life. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you've been negatively impacted by a narcissistic personality type, you're not alone.

Greater Sudbury is the largest city in Northern Ontario and a regional centre for mining, healthcare, and education in a geographically vast and isolated part of Canada, where the distance from major urban centres and the realities of a resource-based economy shape the mental health landscape in specific ways. The city has a significant Indigenous population and a French-speaking minority, and mental health services that are culturally and linguistically responsive to both communities are an important part of the care landscape. Harsh winters, geographic isolation, and the cyclical economic pressures of a mining-dependent economy contribute to elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use, and Laurentian University's psychology programs have historically contributed to the local supply of trained professionals. Both public and private therapy services are available, though access to specialized care can require telehealth or travel to southern Ontario.
