Dissociative disorders manifest a profound interplay between the psyche's protective mechanisms and the echoes of past trauma. A person's sense of self can be shattered, resulting in a loss of identity and reality. This can be caused by events such as severe trauma, caregiver relationship problems, and early attachment experiences. Like a fragmented mosaic, dissociative symptoms manifest as a coping mechanism, shielding individuals from the unbearable weight of their past experiences. Therapy offers a sacred space for exploration and integration, gently guiding individuals through the labyrinth of dissociation to reclaim their sense of wholeness and connection. By fostering secure attachments and processing traumatic memories, individuals can mend the fractures of their psyche, forging a path towards healing and self-discovery.

In the face of traumatic experiences, we dissociate to cope with those experiences. Healing your dissociations involves healing your trauma and restoring you to your full personhood free from the memory fragments, compartmentalization and physical tension that you experience.

Do you have difficulty staying the present? This may feel like parts of you are pulling you away from what is happening now or memories of the past. This can feel like avoiding, losing time, becoming distracted, or worst- completely blacking out. This happens when our system is overwhelmed by stress caused by current or past triggers and our survival instinct kicks in that creates distance from these feelings. It can be both a relief and a scary experience. We work with dissociation by getting to know why it is happening, what parts are seeking to distance, and provide resources and connection to working with those parts to increase their safety. Often an adaptive response to traumatic experiences, we might unconsciously dissociate in order to cope with the overwhelming impacts. My trauma-informed approach to working with dissociative states involves a phased approach toward healing that seeks to sensitively and safely reconnect us to our bodies, foster reintegration between the mind and body and restore a sense of agency, resiliency and emotional strength.
Dissociation is a behaviour that is automatic and can be incredibly frustrating; one can feel betrayed by their own body, frustrated by the behaviour occurring, and confused as to what triggers it or why it happens in the first place. When I work with clients with dissociation issues, it is imperative to understand why the brain would cause us to dissociate, and how we can retrain the brain to eliminate this very problematic behaviour altogether.
