When I work with couples who are seeking support with their relationship--whether to address challenges around communication, connection, intimacy, infidelity--I seek to collaborate with both individuals in a way that centers the relationship itself as the client.

Lincoln Stoller
Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, CHt, CCPCP
I have had many relationships well beyond the traditional kinds. I have worked with groups and individuals as a physicist, management consultant, mountaineer, pilot, project manager, CEO, student, teacher, counselor, and therapist. In addition, I've put much effort into being a parent, lover, partner, and, most importantly, as a child of a somewhat dysfunctional but "intact" family. It is a misnomer to focus on "relationship and marriage" as a unique situation. All relationships hang on the same dynamics of honesty, transparency, integrity, and commitment. All of these exist on a spectrum, and they are most tested and demand the most in our most important relationships.
If you are weak in these skills in any relationships, then you are going to be weak in them in your most important relationships. In my experiences with couples and clients navigating relationships, personal integrity is always the key. It is up to you to decide where you draw the line in terms of commitment and disclosure, but do not expect great results in any relationship unless you hold yourself to the highest standards. Do not expect reciprocation even when you deserve it. In some sense, a good relationship is something you must define for yourself.
The fundamental problem in most relationships is that you accept a low standard. You may have never had a role model who lived to a high standard, and you may not know how to achieve a high standard. I can help you become a better person but beware: there are reasons behind who you are and what you've become. You'll have to address these reasons before you can move beyond them. That is why relationship work is difficult. Ultimately, the ball is in your court. Are you ready to raise the bar?

Partners often trigger each other’s unresolved wounds, not simply as conflict, but as opportunities for deeper understanding and growth. In our work, we focus on recognizing these patterns, taking responsibility for personal triggers, and developing emotional awareness rather than reacting or blaming. I work with couples both together and individually, supporting each person in addressing their own history so it is not unconsciously brought into the relationship. The goal is to move toward more authentic connection, clearer communication, and a more grounded and conscious way of relating.
