One of the hallmarks is having extremely elevated moods or highs called mania cycled with extremely low episodes of depression. There is also hypomania which can be referenced as Bipolar II disorder. It is similar to mania, but it not as severe. Bipolar is hard to diagnose due to the varied symptoms.
