Chicago, Illinois therapist: Dr. Ryan Kitts Schallon, psychologist
Bipolar Disorder

Dr. Ryan Kitts Schallon

Psychologist, PsyD
The highs feel like finally becoming yourself. The lows feel like proof that the real you was the broken one all along. Somewhere between these two convictions is a person trying to hold a life together across states that seem to belong to different people entirely. Therapy here is not about flattening the range. It is about building a self sturdy enough to remain continuous through it — to know, in the middle of either pole, that you are still the one who was there yesterday and will be there tomorrow. Bipolar Disorder requires us to work with effective medication management, as we are dually wrestling with a medical and psychological phenomenon.

New York City, New York therapist: Nancy Burns, counselor/therapist
Bipolar Disorder

Nancy Burns

Counselor/Therapist, JD, LMHC, LPC, MA, EMDR Certified
Have you have experienced repeated bouts of depression, possibly since you were an adolescent you even earlier in your life? Perhaps you have worked with other therapists and counselors and might have tried different anti-depressant medications, which seem to work for awhile, but then all of a sudden they stop working and your depression has returned. Besides the sadness and hopelessness that accompanies the depressed mood, you might experience periods of irritability. Your family and friends might have told you that they feel as if they have to walk on eggshells when you are around. You might often have uncomfortable emotional reactions that out of character and you feel are uncontrollable. The expression of these strong emotions, and the behaviors that accompany them, have interfered with your professional and personal relationships. You also often might have had distressing thoughts which move too fast and which you can’t get to slow down. You sometimes might feel as if you want to jump out of your skin or that you have a tornado raging in your chest. All of this might have you feeling hopeless, as if you won’t ever have control of your life. As we work together, we will explore the patterns of your mood states and the accompanying emotions and behaviors that you have experienced. We will identify your repetitive negative thoughts and challenge their truthfulness while practicing new coping skills so that you can gain more control of your emotions. We might discuss the possibility of a referral to a medical provider for a trial of different medications, if it seems as if that might be helpful. We will strive towards helping you gain control over your mood and emotions, instead of your mood and emotions controlling you.

Chesapeake is the largest city in Virginia by land area — a mostly suburban and semi-rural community spread across the southern Hampton Roads region — with a therapy landscape shaped by its proximity to Naval Station Norfolk and the broader military community, as well as the particular stresses of a sprawling suburb where long commutes and limited walkable community can contribute to social isolation. The city's large African American population and its place within Hampton Roads' racially complex social fabric create demand for culturally affirming therapists who work with racial identity, community resilience, and intergenerational family dynamics. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center provides institutional mental health resources alongside the broader Hampton Roads healthcare ecosystem. Many Chesapeake residents access therapy through the wider Norfolk-Virginia Beach metro, given the city's geographic extent and integration with the regional mental health network.
