Brittany Statler, Intuitive Wellness Therapy Group

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
Headline: When "Doing it All" Still Feels Like Falling Behind The Burden of Being "The Best" To the world, you have it together. You are the high-achiever, the reliable one, the one who doesn't miss a detail. But internally, the "inner critic" is never satisfied. Whether it’s at work, in your relationships, or in your own self-image, you feel like you are one mistake away from being "exposed." This relentless drive for perfection isn't just a habit—it’s a survival strategy that has left you burnt out and disconnected. My Approach: From Performance to Presence In my private-pay practice, we don't just "talk" about your stress. We work to dismantle the rigid rules that keep you stuck. I help high-achieving perfectionists move from a life of constant performance to one of authentic presence. Using an integrated approach, we will: Neutralize the Inner Critic: Learn to hear the perfectionist voice without letting it drive your decisions. Embrace "Good Enough": Build the psychological flexibility to prioritize your well-being over an impossible standard. Reconnect with Values: Pivot your energy away from external validation and toward the things that actually bring you fulfillment.

Perfectionism is a personality style and mindset characterised by striving for flawlessness, setting excessively high performance standards, and engaging in overly critical self-evaluation. While many praise it in professional and academic settings as a driver of success, clinical psychology views it not as a healthy pursuit of excellence but as a rigid, self-defeating trap rooted in fear of failure, judgment, or rejection. Understanding the Difference: Perfectionism vs Healthy Striving Healthy Striving: Focuses on personal growth, enjoys the learning process, feels satisfied with a job well done, and views mistakes as valuable feedback. Perfectionism: Focuses on avoiding failure, measures self-worth entirely by achievements, views anything less than flawless as total failure, and is driven by intense anxiety. Common Dimensions of Perfectionism Self-Oriented Perfectionism: Imposing unrealistic standards and harsh self-criticism Other-Oriented Perfectionism: Expecting flawlessness, high precision, and perfection from family members, friends, or colleagues. Socially Prescribed Perfectionism: The belief that others (parents, bosses, society) expect perfection, and that acceptance and love depend on meeting those impossible expectations. (This dimension is most closely linked to anxiety, burnout, and depression.) Common Behaviours & Signs Procrastination & Paralysis: Delaying tasks because the fear of not doing them perfectly makes starting feel too overwhelming. All-or-Nothing Thinking: Believing that if a project or performance isn't 100% successful, it isn't a complete failure (e.g., "If I get a B, I'm a 'total failure'"). Chronic Dissatisfaction: Inability to celebrate achievements. Once a goal is met, the perfectionist immediately moves the goalposts or focuses on minor flaws. Hyper-Focus on Detail: Spending excessive time on minor elements of a task at the expense of the bigger picture, often leading to severe burnout. Masking Mistakes: Going to extreme lengths to hide errors or imperfections out of fear of looking incompetent. The Impact on Well-Being While perfectionists often achieve external success, it comes at a high internal cost. Chronic perfectionism is strongly linked to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, chronic stress, relationship friction, and physical exhaustion. Remember: Perfectionism tries to convince you that your worth depends on your output. Letting go of perfection doesn't mean lowering your standards; it means valuing your well-being, progress, and humanity as much as your achievements.

Perfectionism often develops as a protective strategy rather than a personality trait. My approach explores the underlying nervous system patterns that drive overachievement, self-criticism, and chronic pressure.

Counsellor/Therapist, MA (Hons), Adv Dip. Counsel. & Psychoth.,Dip. Hypnoth., X-Cultural Adaptation Coun. Reg. BACP 572613
For many women, perfectionism is not simply about high standards or wanting to “do things well”. Often it develops as a way of feeling safe, accepted and emotionally protected. Many women living abroad become highly skilled at monitoring themselves: how they speak, how they appear, how they are perceived, whether they are doing enough, achieving enough, adapting enough. Over time, this constant self-monitoring can create emotional exhaustion, anxiety, chronic pressure and a nervous system that struggles to fully relax. For many Italian women living between cultures and expectations, perfectionism can become deeply connected to belonging, identity and the fear of being judged as “too much”, “not enough” or somehow different. My work explores the deeper emotional and nervous system patterns underneath perfectionism, people pleasing and over-functioning. I offer a warm, reflective and holistic space where women can begin reconnecting with self-worth, authenticity and inner safety without constantly needing to perform, adapt or prove themselves. I integrate psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, EFT, embodiment, lifestyle medicine, reflective dialogue and nature-based approaches to support women in moving from chronic pressure toward greater emotional ease, regulation and self-trust.

Striving for perfection can be an incredibly challenging pursuit especially when you're aware that it can’t be achieved. It’s not uncommon for clients to feel that whatever they do is never good enough. This deficit can generally be traced back to their past and how they relate to themselves. I work with my clients to explore the sources of the demands for perfection that they impose on themselves ultimately with a view to being kinder to themselves.
