Ryan Shannon
Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA, MA, MS
Body image concerns can quietly influence nearly every part of life. You may avoid photos, intimacy, dating, certain clothes, exercise settings, or social events because you feel uncomfortable being seen. You might compare yourself constantly, fixate on perceived flaws, or believe you need to look different before you can feel attractive, confident, or worthy of connection.
My approach is both insight-oriented and practical. Drawing from Adlerian and psychodynamic therapy, we may explore how criticism, bullying, rejection, family messages, cultural expectations, or past relationships shaped the way you learned to view your body. These experiences can create deeply rooted beliefs that continue operating in the background, even when another part of you knows they are unfair or unrealistic.
I also use CBT to help you identify distorted thoughts, challenge harsh self-judgments, and develop a more balanced view of yourself. When appropriate, we may use gradual behavioral “missions” to reduce avoidance, such as wearing something you like, attending an event without excessive appearance checking, allowing yourself to be photographed, or becoming more comfortable with vulnerability and intimacy. Mindfulness can also help you notice critical thoughts without automatically treating them as facts.
When body-image distress is connected to painful or traumatic experiences, approaches such as EMDR may help reduce the emotional charge attached to those memories. The goal is not to convince you that you must love every part of your appearance every day. It is to help you develop a more respectful and peaceful relationship with your body, separate your worth from how you look, and participate more fully in the life and relationships you want.

Louise Perry
Registered Psychotherapist, IFS UKCP HCCP
I work with adults who struggle with body image and the ways it can shape self-worth, relationships, and how people move through the world. Difficulties with body image are often bound up with long-standing beliefs, protective strategies, and patterns of self-criticism that develop over time.
My approach draws on Integrative Art Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), offering ways to explore how these patterns operate internally and what purpose they may serve. Rather than focusing on appearance or symptom reduction, the work centres on understanding the relationship you have with your body and the meanings attached to it. Sessions may involve conversation, creative exploration, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most useful.

Brian McCormack (Connemara Counseling)
Counselor/Therapist, LPC-A/LMHCA
I provide support for individuals seeking to develop a healthier relationship with their body by addressing negative self-image, distorted thinking patterns, and underlying emotional factors that contribute to body dissatisfaction. Using evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, self-compassion training, and mindfulness, I support clients in challenging unrealistic standards, reducing comparison and shame, and building a more balanced and accepting self-view. My work focuses on fostering confidence, resilience, and values-based living, empowering clients to shift from self-criticism to self-respect and to engage more fully in their lives beyond appearance.
