All problems with Anxiety & Fear (which may include phobias & Obsessive Compulsive disorder) are linked to an inappropriate activation of the centers in the brain that are responsible for detecting danger. You will learn skills to think through and manage these reactions, and you will be guided through processes that will repattern the way your brain reacts to these situations.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective form of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders. Generally a short-term treatment, CBT focuses on teaching you specific skills to improve your symptoms and gradually return to the activities you've avoided because of anxiety.
Anxiety is a way that our brains tell us that danger may be present. While anxiety is helpful in some circumstances, it can become overwhelming and prevent us from being in the present. I help my clients to manage their anxiety by using coping strategies to calm their bodies and learning to reframe the thoughts that trigger their symptoms.
We can start with CBT to determine the thoughts which lead and prolong the anxiety and learn how to change those to more realistic thoughts. I teach relaxation skills such as breathing and meditation. I like to hear the history of anxiety in their lifespan so we can do deeper work to determine the source of the anxiety and perhaps do EMDR or LI. I can discuss medication options as well.
