Cullins Psychological and Counseling Services PLLC

Psychologist, Joanna Cullins PsyD
We are all sad sometimes, but depression is much more than that. I once had a professor who maintained that "anxiety always precedes depression" and in many cases this is true. Like anxiety, depression has physiological and genetic components and whether it is unipolar or Bipolar, it can be debilitating. Cognitive Behavioral and Interpersonal Process Therapies are helpful in treating depression. Psychoeducation is also a key component. When we can understand, how our thoughts and behaviors are affected by changes in our neurotransmitters, we can break free of the vicious cycle of depression. I often tell people "when you are depressed, you are like a car trying to run on too little oil." The oil, in this case is your Neurotransmitters (often Serotonin and sometimes Norepinephrine or Dopamine). Cognitve therapy and behavioral activation help your body to produce more of these much needed chemicals and can put you on the road to recovery.

When treating depression we focus on helping you navigate any experiences of persistent sadness, low energy, loss of motivation, feelings of hopelessness, and other symptoms that interfere with daily life. I use evidence-based approaches to identify unhelpful thought patterns, strengthen coping skills, and support emotional regulation. The goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment where you can process your experiences, rebuild self-worth, and gradually restore a sense of purpose, connection, and hope.

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions diagnosed. In my experience, cognitive-behavioral therapy has been the most effective approach to treating depression symptoms. This would entail address thinking errors, altering maladaptive behaviors and increases one's level of mindfulness to reduce depression symptoms.

Depression has been referred to as, “The Black Dog.” It can be all consuming and requires a compassionate approach. Sometimes it is helpful to involve a psychiatrist to see if medication might be useful, but this is not always the case.
