Seattle, Washington therapist: Ryan Shannon, counselor/therapist
Body Image

Ryan Shannon

Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA, MA, MS
Body image concerns can quietly influence nearly every part of life. You may avoid photos, intimacy, dating, certain clothes, exercise settings, or social events because you feel uncomfortable being seen. You might compare yourself constantly, fixate on perceived flaws, or believe you need to look different before you can feel attractive, confident, or worthy of connection. My approach is both insight-oriented and practical. Drawing from Adlerian and psychodynamic therapy, we may explore how criticism, bullying, rejection, family messages, cultural expectations, or past relationships shaped the way you learned to view your body. These experiences can create deeply rooted beliefs that continue operating in the background, even when another part of you knows they are unfair or unrealistic. I also use CBT to help you identify distorted thoughts, challenge harsh self-judgments, and develop a more balanced view of yourself. When appropriate, we may use gradual behavioral “missions” to reduce avoidance, such as wearing something you like, attending an event without excessive appearance checking, allowing yourself to be photographed, or becoming more comfortable with vulnerability and intimacy. Mindfulness can also help you notice critical thoughts without automatically treating them as facts. When body-image distress is connected to painful or traumatic experiences, approaches such as EMDR may help reduce the emotional charge attached to those memories. The goal is not to convince you that you must love every part of your appearance every day. It is to help you develop a more respectful and peaceful relationship with your body, separate your worth from how you look, and participate more fully in the life and relationships you want.

McKinney, Texas therapist: Kreins Psychological Services, psychologist

Kreins Psychological Services

Psychologist, PhD, PsyD
As a psychologist specializing in body image, my treatment approach is grounded in fostering self-acceptance, resilience, and a positive relationship with one's body. Through evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions, I work collaboratively with individuals to challenge negative beliefs and behaviors related to body image. By exploring underlying factors such as societal pressures, past traumas, and internalized messages, we develop personalized strategies to promote self-compassion and enhance body appreciation. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of self-care practices, boundary-setting, and building a supportive social network to reinforce positive body image. My goal is to empower individuals to embrace their bodies with confidence, cultivate holistic well-being, and navigate societal standards with authenticity.

Prince George, British Columbia therapist: Aria Fraser, hypnotherapist

Aria Fraser

Hypnotherapist, Certified Rapid Transformational Therapist
If a person has a negative view of their body image, it usually stems from negative experiences where a child was made to feel unloved or unsafe around others, if they were the target of some negative judgment, abuse, or trauma. If a belief was formed that they were not good enough/ pretty enough/ perfect enough/ big enough/ safe enough, or felt they had to comply with abuse from a caregiver whom they depended on, or they feel too different compared to others, it affects the way they see themselves and impacts their ability to connect with other people in a healthy way. An example of another such belief can look like "I want to feel/ look attractive, but attractive people get abused/ assaulted". Rapid Transformational Therapy is incredibly effective at helping a person see how those beliefs of poor body/ self-image were trying to help them or protect them. They can then be compassionately released, and new beliefs of empowerment and acceptance created in their place. RTT specializes in transforming people with complete self-acceptance, as that is often the root of so many issues. Ongoing support is given after the session to provide further help.

Tycee Belcastro

Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., LMFT, CSTIP
Living in the Western U.S., you’re probably all too familiar with the constant barrage of ads and messages telling you what “attractive” looks like—and how that somehow equals being worthy or lovable. If you’ve been through trauma, your body might feel like it’s holding onto that pain, making you feel disconnected from parts of yourself. I get how hard that can be. Healing your body image is deep, personal work—an inside job. It’s about sorting through your emotions, discovering your emotional issues and learning to deal with them, shaking off society’s unrealistic standards, and healing those wounds. My goal is to help you reconnect with your body, not as something merely to “perform” or prove your worth, but as a source of joy, energy, health, and even a sacred connection to your spirit.
