Treatment Approach

  • Art Therapy Uses creative activities like drawing, painting, or sculpture as a way to express emotions. It is especially helpful when words are hard to find.
  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Christian Counseling Blends psychological practices with Christian values and scripture. It provides faith-based support for life challenges and spiritual growth.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Developmental Therapy Looks at how childhood and developmental experiences affect current challenges. It aims to repair unmet needs and foster healthy growth.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Play Therapy Uses toys, games, and creative play to help children express emotions. It is especially useful when children can’t fully verbalize their feelings.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Sandplay Therapy Uses sand trays and miniature figures to allow symbolic expression. It is especially helpful for children and trauma survivors.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I draw from a range of evidence-based and developmentally appropriate approaches to meet each child and family where they are—and to support them in becoming who they’re meant to be. My therapeutic style is integrative and responsive, combining elements of play therapy, art therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems, and solution-focused strategies with attachment and developmental principles. For children, I primarily use play therapy and expressive tools like sand play and art therapy to help them explore emotions, process trauma, and build regulation skills in ways that feel natural and safe. These modalities are developmentally attuned to how children communicate and learn, especially when words are hard to find. For families, I use psychoeducational and solution-focused approaches to strengthen connection, reduce conflict, and support parents in building confident, responsive relationships with their children. I also draw on Christian counseling when requested, integrating faith-based encouragement and wisdom for families who value spiritual support as part of their healing journey. Each session is thoughtfully designed to create safety, build on strengths, and foster real change—whether we’re exploring big emotions through a puppet story, restructuring unhelpful thought patterns, or navigating family dynamics. No two families are the same, which is why I offer an eclectic approach grounded in clinical excellence, compassion, and a deep respect for your family's unique story.

Sabrina Ragan Practice Description
At Keystone Child & Family Therapy, my mission is to walk alongside children and families with compassion, clarity, and care. I specialize in helping children navigate emotional challenges, behavioral struggles, and the effects of trauma by supporting both the child and their environment. I believe healing happens in relationship—through play, through presence, and through the power of connection. I offer play therapy, family therapy, and parent support rooted in developmental science, attachment theory, and nearly two decades of experience. Play is a child’s natural language, and through it, I help children express big feelings, develop emotional regulation skills, build resilience, and process difficult experiences in a way that feels safe and familiar. My work extends beyond the individual child. I know that family dynamics deeply impact a child’s wellbeing. That’s why I integrate family therapy into my work, supporting parents and caregivers in creating calmer, more connected homes. Together, we untangle stuck patterns and build new pathways for communication, cooperation, and emotional growth. I am proud to offer secure telepsychology services to families across Alberta using Zoom and a virtual therapeutic playroom called Play Space. This allows me to reach children in rural or remote communities, and those who prefer the privacy and comfort of receiving support at home. Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, emotional outbursts, low self-esteem, or trauma, I am here to help. You don’t have to walk this path alone. At Keystone, you’ll find expertise, encouragement, and tools that make parenting feel more hopeful, healing, and doable.
