A narcissistic personality is an individual who lacks self confidence while giving the impression that it is all about them, when in fact, that individual is insecure and unclear of their own identity. Narcissism is a necessary component of a healthy ego. Everyone needs self-esteem in order to function successfully in society. On the other hand, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a legitimate disorder that is not only an outcome of the selfishness encouraged by modern culture but a legitimate condition with unconscious roots in early experiences of basic needs being unmet. Narcissism manifests as problems with regulating self-esteem, grasping one’s relative place in a world of others, and participating in relationships in which one demonstrates regard to others as independent objects with minds and feelings of their own. People with unhealthy degrees of narcissism have difficulty in understanding others’ perspectives, in letting themselves be vulnerable without feeling threatened, and in respecting or having awareness of boundaries. To get at the core of the defensive symptoms of grandiosity, entitlement, vulnerability, erraticism, and emotional explosiveness that attend NPD, and to begin to engage in considerate and empathic relationships, learning to be curious about and to imagine what things are like for others is key. By exploring the motivations underlying narcissistic behavioral traits, psychodynamic psychotherapy leads to greater self-awareness; authentic, fulfilling interpersonal interactions; and genuine confidence in oneself.

Psychologist, PsyD.
Treatment for those who are in relationships with people who have narcissistic personality disorder. Therapy empowers survivors of trauma to recognize and challenge negative self-perceptions, anxiety, and self-doubt, which are all common outcomes of narcissistic abuse. Narcissistic abuse leaves a particular kind of damage — one that is difficult to explain to people who have not experienced it. If you have spent time in a relationship with a narcissistic partner, parent, or colleague, you may find yourself questioning your own reality, struggling with self-worth, or carrying anxiety and confusion that feels impossible to shake. As a licensed clinical psychologist with 20+ years of experience, I specialize in narcissistic abuse recovery, coercive control, emotional manipulation, and trauma bonding — helping adults reclaim their sense of self and rebuild genuine confidence. Telehealth therapy for narcissistic abuse available across 40+ states.

San Jose, California therapist: Growth and Change Counseling, marriage and family therapist
Narcissism

Growth and Change Counseling

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
The reality is everyone has a bit of Narcissism because we are all selfish in the way we look at and see the world as individuals. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is frequently thrown around these days, often by partners in relationships to describe their experiences of the other person. Its frequently overused because in the pain of our broken communication, destructive conflicts, and relational isolation, its hard to see the spouse or partner any other way than the box I've put them in. And yet, given relationally intelligent tools many of these couples are then able to experience a radical transformation in their relationship and build true lasting intimacy with one another. That said, there is a true Narcissistic Personality Disorder, less frequent than commonly popularized, but real none the less. I've worked with these cases and its very difficult if not impossible for this type of person to take responsibility for anything they did. If you think you are dealing with someone with this disorder, don't hestitate. Call Growth and Change Counseling today at 408-461-9658.

We have extensive background supporting folks through narcissistic trauma recovery. As well, on occasion, we will work with folks who identify as Narcissistic and are willing to engage in recovery. We recognize this takes strong footing in intersectional framework to interrupt power abuse, as well, some narcissistic expression is trauma based and can benefit from dyadic internal parts work and the recovery may/may not take as long as an entitlement origin NPD. Trauma based NPD can sometimes be hidden amongst other trauma based symptoms. Some is entitlement based and requires a person to grow their existential field of relational compassion and actual empathy. Typically these situations require others in the family/close circle system to not enable and be collaboratively on board with holding the person with NPD to account for their behaviors. This is also true for those who are malignantly codependent and controlling. If that systemic agreement is not in place, often the person with NPD will lean on the enablers to try to escape accountability. NPD is unfortunately at pandemic like levels culturally in the hegemon, so it takes a strong culture of willingness to call people acting out into account -- they will not stop on their own. If you are seeking care for a loved one with this issue, as much as it would be wonderful to magically heal them, likely it is best to get your own care first! NPD Recovery is wonderful, worth it, and often takes many, many, many years of dedicated care! Loved ones and caring bystanders need to learn how to hold up a stop sign to egregious behavior out of care for the target first and helping the Narcissist to mitigate moral and even physical injury to the target/scapegoat. We need this on all levels, even national and global levels! In some cases, NPD may be physiologically driven by mast cell flares, mold toxin exposure, chronic allergies, lingering infections, continued concussive symptoms ... -- in these cases, which are very different than conditioning, we would employ a more functional and integrative strategy.
