Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a type of anxiety where people ruminate over distressing thoughts and then engage in repetitive behaviors or mental acts as a way of managing the obsessive thoughts. It can take many forms with varying levels of intensity. OCD is typically treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy combined with Exposure Response Prevention. We will explore the thoughts and compulsions you're experiencing and create a robust plan of changing your experience of anxiety.

Heidi Hartston
Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. Monica M. Huston
Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Obsessive-compulsive patterns often involve intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can feel difficult to control. I work with individuals to understand the underlying anxiety and internal pressure driving these cycles, rather than only focusing on symptom reduction. Therapy supports increased awareness, greater tolerance for uncertainty, and more flexibility in responding to distressing thoughts and urges.

Gail Kirk Poust
Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
OCD is a bully that takes your values hostage. It finds what you care about most (your loved ones' safety, your goodness, your faith, your relationship) and turns it into unwanted thoughts you can't shake and rituals you can't skip: checking, washing, confessing, mentally reviewing, asking for reassurance one more time. The relief never lasts, and the loop keeps tightening. Here's what I want you to know: intrusive thoughts are not intentions, and being horrified by a thought is proof of your values, not evidence against them. I treat OCD with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), the gold-standard approach. It is collaborative, paced, never sprung on you. I also treat postpartum OCD, where intrusive thoughts about your baby leave you terrified and silent. That, too, is treatable, and having the thought is not the same as being a danger. The thoughts have had the last word long enough.

OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example.
Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity.
Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/
