Rick Brodsky
Psychologist, PsyD, MA
Depression is very common, yet the origins and its presentation can be variable. We can explore what methodologies are a best fit for you. Typically, I find psychodynamic talk therapy to be useful as we work collaboratively to develop insight and understanding. Cognitive behavioral therapy can provide us many strategies and new perspectives. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps us to think flexibly and make choices that are aligned with our values.

Since I am not a licensed therapist, I'm not allowed to diagnose conditions such as Depression. This is a term that is often thrown around quite readily and clients often state they suffer from depression, whether or not they have been formally diagnosed by a therapist in the past. Generally, it is a rather broad diagnosis covering a wide range of behaviors. For hypnotists, many of these behaviors are simply a negative habit of mind that we can change, neutralizing many of the past traumas that have led to their problems. I have worked with many such clients, however. In many cases my clients have been in therapy for years, even decades, and while they understood the roots of their feelings, they got no relief. One of my earliest clients was a woman who suffered tremendous emotional abuse as a child and grew up with a crushing feeling of worthlessness. She became grossly overweight and worked at menial jobs her whole life, unable to form any successful and satisfying relationships. Through hypnosis, she was able to lose 170 pounds and after one session focused on her past trauma, she was so lightened of her lifelong burden of self loathing that she practically floated out of my office and she insisted on paying me double my fee. She has been free of her burdens now for 5 years and comes in once a year for a refresher session. I have had many such results in my practice.

Much of my work involves working with people who have experienced repeated bouts of depression. Besides the sadness, hopelessness, loneliness, and inability to experience joy that accompanies the depressed mood, they might experience periods of irritability. The goal of our work together will be to work with your negative thoughts so that you are able to experience joy again and be a full participant in the richness of life. - - - "Feelings are something you have, not something you are." Not all depressive symptoms are the same.
It's important that your provider asks the right questions. Often, the label “Depression” is tossed around in popular culture as a way to describe a feeling or a mood, i.e. “I’m depressed thinking about how much work I have to do this weekend” or, “After looking at my bank balance this morning, I’m completely depressed.” While these situations CAN trigger sadness, hopelessness, and/or other unpleasant emotions, they are NOT a Depressive Disorder.
We want to help rule out chemical, physical, environmental, and other factors to help you really get to the bottom of things.

Depression is highly treatable, with many of the techniques from therapies like CBT or IFS. Simply talking and processing depression makes it start to heal. Sometimes your depression may be situational instead of biological. Each persons depression is different, requiring a differing approach.

Dr. Nelson uses Integrative mental health that addresses brain health which is directly influenced by biological factors, psychological factors, social factors, and spiritual factors. I have worked throughout my career to help individuals (children, adolescents, and adults) manage aspects of depression that are significantly impacting their functioning and well-being. I further help them identify strengths and skills that can help them best manage their depression. This sometimes involves referral to and/or collaboration with a medication prescriber for comprehensive care and maximization of management of symptoms.

Alignment Psychotherapy, PLLC
Psychologist, LP, PhD
We approach depression as a complex, multifaceted experience that cannot be reduced to a single cause or treated with a one-size-fits-all method. Each person’s depression is shaped by a unique interplay of biological, psychological, relational, and environmental factors, and we tailor our work accordingly. Our approach is integrative and draws from several evidence-based therapeutic orientations. From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we help clients identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that may be maintaining depressive symptoms. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) informs our focus on helping clients develop psychological flexibility, build a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings, and reconnect with what matters most to them. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) contributes practical skills for managing intense emotions, increasing distress tolerance, and improving interpersonal effectiveness. Schema Therapy allows us to explore and work through deeper, longstanding patterns rooted in early life experiences that often underlie chronic or recurring depression. Rather than applying these approaches rigidly, we integrate them in a way that fits each individual’s needs, goals, and values. Our aim is not only to reduce symptoms, but to support clients in building a more meaningful, resilient, and self-compassionate way of living.

There are several approaches that can work well, and I use them in combinations depending on the wishes of the client.
