Evan Podolak, PsyD
Psychologist, PsyD
Depression can have a variety of negative effects on one's experience. These can include: low mood, feelings of helplessness and/or hopelessness, changes in appetite and sleep, loss of motivation or pleasure from activities and generally poor views of oneself, the world and one's future. By learning to actively challenge the negative beliefs that are associated with depression, combined with some behavioral changes, depression can often be treated successfully. I work collaboratively with patients to determine the treatment approach most likely to result in improved mood and functioning. This can sometimes include collaborating with a psychiatrist who can prescribe medications that work in conjunction with psychotherapy to speed a successful recovery.

Root & Rise Clinical Specialists
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-R
At Root & Rise, CBT is woven into our work as a foundational, evidence-based tool—not a one-size-fits-all formula. Our clinicians use CBT to help clients gain clarity around the thought patterns and behaviors that fuel anxiety and depression, while also integrating it with deeper, insight-oriented and trauma-informed approaches. We use CBT in a flexible, personalized way: identifying patterns, practicing new skills, challenging distortions, and building healthier coping strategies that support real, sustainable change. It’s one of the many modalities we blend to help clients move from awareness into action.

Andy Lapides
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, BCD
Most of my clients who have worked with me for six months straight have improved. I have worked with many clients who've suffered from depression and treated them successfully. Depression is highly treatable and manageable. The combination of psychotherapy and medication management (I collaborate heavily with prescribers) show the best outcomes in research. Together we create a treatment plan that is successful for managing and decreasing depressive symptoms.

f you’ve been feeling low for a long time, struggling to enjoy things you once cared about, or finding it hard to get through the day, you’re not alone. Depression is a common and very real condition. It can stem from many different factors—genetic, biological, emotional, social, or environmental—and it affects each person differently.
The good news is: healing is possible.
Psychotherapy offers a safe and supportive space to explore what you’re going through. Together, we can begin to uncover the roots of your depression and gently work toward healthier ways of thinking and coping.
One important part of this process involves learning to recognize and reframe negative thought patterns that often come with depression. Over time, you can start to feel more in control, experience relief, and reconnect with the parts of life that bring you meaning and joy.
You don’t have to face this alone. Change is possible—and it can start with a single conversation.

Depression isn’t just sadness, it can feel like being cut off from your own vitality, moving through life under a heavy fog, or feeling numb and unseen. In my work with depression, I blend somatic therapy, creative exploration, and depth-oriented conversation to help you reconnect to your body’s wisdom and spark. I create a safe, grounded space where you can honor your pain, unravel shame, and discover the strength and insight hidden within even the darkest seasons. Healing from depression isn’t about forcing positivity, it’s about learning to trust your own rhythms and slowly coming back to yourself, one breath at a time.

Katherine Rabinowitz
Licensed Psychoanalyst, LP, M.A., NCPsyA
Depression is insidious. We don't always know where it comes from. Like with anxiety, some people are born with a predisposition to see the glass half-empty rather than half-full. It feels awful. It slows you down. It makes it hard to feel motivated to go after what you want. It makes it hard to enjoy the things you are surrounded by and have the opportunity to take advantage of. If it becomes severe (such that you've stopped going to work or have a hard time getting out of bed) I will refer you for an evaluation for medication. Much has changed in this arena in the last couple of decades and there are medications that might help you out of the morass and without the complications of side effects that are associated with some of the earlier drugs.
However, hopefully it won't come to that. My aim is to help you figure out what's getting in your way, emotionally, and causing you to feel depressed. If you are motivated to accept new insights to your habitual way of thinking, it's possible to start feeling less depressed and more willing to be present in the world.
There's no magic. I wish there were. Some people come in expecting a "solution" to their problems in five easy lessons, but it doesn't work that way. Therapy is a process, and it applies to depression as well as any other condition or state of mind you might find yourself in. But it's rarely impossible if you're willing to make the commitment to work through your stumbling blocks, you're likely to begin to climb up out of the darkness you feel you're trapped in. I'd like to help you do that.

I get it, depression can take over the things you once loved and looked forward to. It can make it so challenging to take the next steps, or even know what the next step might be. I'm here to sit with you through the dark moments, and to be there with you as you find your light once more. Through a strengths-based lens, I use strategies based in CBT and DBT to assist individuals struggling with depression.

Depression is very common, yet the origins and its presentation can be variable. We can explore what methodologies are a best fit for you. Typically, I find psychodynamic talk therapy to be useful as we work collaboratively to develop insight and understanding. Cognitive behavioral therapy can provide us many strategies and new perspectives. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps us to think flexibly and make choices that are aligned with our values.
