Brad Byrum

Marriage and Family Therapist, MA, MBA, LMFT
I am passionate about creating new models for the delivery of psychotherapy and behavioral wellness coaching utilizing web-based technologies which allow us to increase access, reduce cost, and enhance effectiveness while reducing the stigma often associated with emotional/cognitive suffering. I work with clients via secure video, email, and text as well as HIPPA compliant complimentary resources. Research studies consistently indicate that online video therapy is equivalent to face-to-face care in various settings. Because online video therapy is a relatively new, innovative and evolving form of practice, it requires additional, specific training to assure effective clinical outcomes. I am a Board Certified – TeleMental Health Provider (BC – TMH 1808) and I have extensive experience working with clients via online video both as a psychotherapist and as a professional coach. I continue to invest in additional training to remain at the cutting edge of innovation.

I am certified by PSYPACT for Interjurisdictional (Interstate) Telepsychology practice. I use HIPAA-compliant secure video conferencing, and most testing can be performed online as well. I have found that a video conference, in which masks are not needed, allow us to make more real connections than mask-to-mask in the office. Facial expressions can be read and responded to much more effectively in video conference, compared to wearing masks.

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.
